Pros

  • Ultra light
  • Free standing
  • Weather proof
  • Well made
  • External poles
  • Changeable interiors (mesh and cloth)

Cons

  • Floor is super slippery

I was searching for a fee standing ultra light tent last year and found Big Sky International. I purchased their Revolution 2p model (two person size) to reduce condensation issues. Weight at delivery per my electronic scale was 2 lbs 13 oz.

The material is super slick and waterproof. It sets up similar to a Hilleberg Soulo however the Revolution is much lighter. Simply lay it out on the ground or your ground sheet, lay the poles across it in the shape an X and attach them to the tent. The tent is suspended from the poles and the interior is suspended from the exterior. It only takes about 90 seconds to set it up. I could have purchased the Soulo but for most of my backpacking needs the Revolution is the better fit, but if I spent significant time in heavy snow conditions I would want the Soulo. I consider the Revolution to be an ultra light version of the Soulo.

I have used the Revolution extensively over the past several months on a number of multi day trips. It has been used in wind, rain, and on snow. It sets up super fast. I have staked it very tautly and after heavy rain over-night it remained taut and stable. It is very well made and seems to be very durable; however I treat it with care because it is ultra light.

The two-person model I have, 2 lbs 13 oz, comes with two vestibules and two vents so condensation has not been an issue. The two person size is very large for one but would be snug for two. It packs very small and I have even put it in my bear can once enough room had been made.  The one person model is about 6 oz lighter.

An interesting feature is the three interior options. You can order it with the typical mesh interior, a cloth interior for colder conditions, or an X strap that allows it to be set up without an interior to be used as a free standing tarp. The interiors attach to the exterior with small plastic buckles so you can change to the interiors to suit your needs.

I consider the Big Sky International Revolution 2p to be money well spent.
