Black Diamond Moji

rated 3.0 of 5 stars
photo: Black Diamond Moji battery-powered lantern

A small lamp with big ideas. It throws out a decent amount of light and it can be made bright or dim with anything in between. It is not the warmest light I've experienced.

Pros

  • Brightness
  • Level of light can be adjusted
  • 360 degrees of light
  • Can be suspended instead of placed on a surface
  • Battery life
  • Cost

Cons

  • Quality of light is quite harsh

This was gifted to me by Trailspace for being a Reviewer of the Month last year. I have used it on a camping holiday and overnight in a Celtic Round house. It puts out a generous 100 Lumens, but can be adjusted to just a few Lumens to act as a "nightlight."

This lamp is ideal for camping trips. It runs on three AAA batteries with a battery life of 80-100 hours—pretty impressive! It is well made and seems to be robust enough to withstand being dropped. It has two retractable hooks for hanging or for standing if the surface the lamp is placed on is wet. These hooks worked well enough. Also, it will also tolerate being immersed briefly in water. I would not take it on a backpacking trip as I would consider it a luxury and it would not be worth the extra weight and bulk as a head torch is sufficient.

That being said, for camping and the overnight stay in the Celtic Round House, it was ideal. When camping for a week in Snowdonia it provided ample light for our small tent and the 360-degree all-round output was useful. It was also useful to be able to adjust the brightness. For a family with young kids it can act as a nightlight for comfort and safety as well as easily illuminating a large tent. I took the lamp with me when I stayed overnight in a Celtic Round House and considering we stayed in the chief's house (which is quite big), it illuminated the whole space.

In summary, this is a great lamp that does exactly what it is designed to do, but it is not the warmest light in the world and creates quite a sterile atmosphere as a result. Chuck it in the car for camping as it is compact and versatile but unless you really need a big light I would leave it at the campsite if you are planning to hit the trail. Expect to pay around £18 with p&p included.
