A compact lightweight pot stand which is more versatile than other similar products.

Pros

  • Compact
  • Lightweight
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Fiddly to put together
  • Price
  • Not so efficient when it's windy

I have used both versions of this (stainless steel and titanium) and it's a great way to use an alcohol burner (Trangia style or Evernew). Though not as stable or protective as a Trangia set, it is more stable than other alchol based coooking sets I have used and offers more versatility other than simply boiling water. It also takes up a faction of the space when packed away.

I have successfully cooked simple meals and baked muffins as well as boiling water. Trangia do produce their own stand similar to the Clikstand but, in my pinion, the Clikstand is far superior.

To assemble the Clikstand, three side panels are linked together and when the burner plate is in position it "clicks" into place—hence the name. The burner is placed in the centre and the stand is designed to ensure the correct distance between the burner and the bottom of the pot. Once the stove is lit and the pot is placed on top, a dedicated, fully adjustable windshield can be placed round the pot using three prongs that are attached to each side plate, an extra feature that the Trangia triangle does not have. Overall the setup is really pleasing to look at.

Boil times vary depending on the weather but typically takes around 6-8 minutes to bring a couple of cups to a rolling boil. There is room for the simmer ring for a Trangia and, unlike the Trangia 27 set, it is possible to place it on without getting burnt! If using the Evernew burner, it is advisable to purchase the adaptor to ensure it does not slip through the hole (annoyingly, the Evernew's diameter is slightly smaller than a Trangia).

The pot stand can also be used with hexamine tablets using a dedicated plate that fits in the slot of the burner plate. Finally, a Trangia gas burner can be inserted into the pot stand (one of the side plates has a groove cut into it to pass the gas hose through).

Putting it together can be frustrating, especially when assembling the three side plates and some practise is needed to do this efficiently. Being an alcohol burner, performance drops in windier conditions and I use an additional windscreen to help deal with this. It is best suited to wider pots such as the MSR Titanium cook set. It is possible to fit an MSR Titan kettle on the pot stand, but the prongs need to be bent inwards to allow this. This is what Clikstand recommend and it works well enough.

Steel versus titanium:

The stainless steel version comes in at 145g and costs $54.95. The titanium version costs £95.95 and weighs 77g—a difference of 68g. That's 13 sugar cubes. For the gram counters this may matter, but I'm sure most will get along with the stainless steel version just as well and not notice the difference—unlike the titanium version it comes with the solid fuel adaptor too!

If you are looking for an alcohol burner setup the Clikstand offers great versatility in a compact and lightweight product. More than just a means of boiling water, simple meals, even baking can be done using it. You'll have to decide whether the extra $41 for the ti version is worth the money for the few grams saved.

Background

I have used both the steel and titanium version on various trips in the UK in varying weather conditions. Mainly on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset.
