Recent Down Insulated Jacket Reviews

Eddie Bauer Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket

rated 2.5 of 5 stars A layering piece for anyone that wants to shave some weight by not carrying a fleece midlayer. This could replace a fleece, but will not move moisture away from you like a fleece. I had this jacket twice. The first one I had to use the excellent EB warranty after two months because the very end of the zipper tab broke, rendering my zipper useless. It is lightweight plastic instead of metal. This shaves weight but sacrifices durability.  The next one that I had I used for about a week. The reason… Full review

Eddie Bauer Men's Superior Down Parka

rated 5 of 5 stars Extremely warm, high quality, luxurious parka, at an amazing price. This is the best parka I have ever owned. I was looking for an Air Force Parka, and it was hard to find an actual jacket rather than a copy. So I started looking for alternatives, as I did not wish to spend $1000 for a Canada Goose parka. I have had it for a few weeks, and it is windproof, water beads on the surface like a freshly waxed car, and it is comfortable in below zero windchills. I'm still discovering many of the features. Xersion Packable Down Midweight Jacket

rated 3 of 5 stars Inexpensive down clothing for trail or town. These products come from JC Penny. I do not know if they are sold elsewhere. They list from $75 to $100 each, sell normally for about $60 and can be found on sale for about $30. I bought the orange one for $20. These jackets and vest are filled with 90% down and 10% feathers. The vest is a lady's with stretch elastic nylon sides for a tighter fit. They are light and warm. We own one vest and three jackets... all are zippered. The wife wears her jacket… Full review

The North Face Men's McMurdo Parka

rated 2 of 5 stars Not nearly as warm as it looks. All "Cons" mentioned here are spot on. I bought this at Macy's in the winter of 2009 in NYC. I believe I paid about $300 for it. It's not worth $200. I agree with all of the "Cons" I've read about it here: cold arms and upper back, poorly conceived and shaped hood. Useless removable ruff faux fur on the hood. Bizarre placement of adjustment cords (inside hidden pockets). If you have the extra $200 get the Canada Goose. Really heavy-bulky for what it does. Full review

Eddie Bauer Men's First Ascent Peak XV Down Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Excellent product. I took it trailing in Russia at minus 25 C. Jacket never gave up. Underneath I wore a poly thermal. No issues at all. My gloves gave up, but not the jacket. A true cold weather beast. I was outside for no less then 4 hours at a time. Fantastic jacket. The only jacket I take to the Russian forests in minus 20 to 25 Celsius, never misses a beat. You may read other reviews on more expensive jackets and think you need to spend more money. Take my word for it. This is a sub zero… Full review

MontBell Men's Plasma 1000 Down Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Extremely lightweight down jacket that's warm with a few compromises. Brent provided a great in-depth review. I thought I'd add a second opinion. I had been eyeballing this jacket for not only casual use, but also for backpacking. As it's my first and only down jacket, I went for ultra-lightweight for backpacking. I asked for it for Christmas and Santa was good to me. I'm 5'10"/160 lbs and purchased a large version directly from Montbell. Weight was one of my most important factors and this was… Full review

Marmot Greenland Baffled Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Very warm, lightweight and "packable," also very comfortable. Of course this means that the fabric is a bit delicate. Suitable for serious cold weather and periods of inactivity. If you are moving or working, this jacket typically stays off. Good sized pockets on inside to keep water bottle from freezing. Good sized outside pockets for hand and stuff you need to have readily accessible. Full review

Triple F.A.T. Goose The Grinnell Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Extremely warm and durable. Storm cuffs keeps the wind from coming up through the sleeves. Coyote fur keeps face warm during blistery days. First thing I need to say is wow! The jacket is extremely warm! I purchased the jacket in size Medium and it fits almost perfect! Modern form fit. I'm 5'9" and 155 by the way. Some features on the jacket include: side vents, storm cuffs, coyote fur hood, 10,000mm water resistant fabric and a detachable real coyote fur hood.  Bought it two months ago and had… Full review

Patagonia Men's Down Snap-T Pullover

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This 600 fill power duck down Down Snap-T Pullover gives you lightweight warmth in a no-nonsense package. The anorak style feels a little warmer than full-zip down sweaters. Hand warmer pockets are great; other pockets are few and small. I see this as a great warm layer for outdoor pursuits—hiking, running, skiing—when you want a warm, light layer that's easy to put on and stuff away without fiddling with a zipper. Introduction Very light down jackets have been very popular the last few years;… Full review
