photo: Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Duffel 90L pack duffel

This 90-liter duffel with wheels can consume a ton of gear. Has handles if you would rather carry than wheel it. Pack straps allow it to be carried on your back.

Pros

  • 90 liter capacity
  • 2 zippered compartments
  • Padded bottom
  • Wheels easily
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Pulls best when very full

When getting ready for an airplane trip necessary for an adventure, there is always, "how am I going to transport all my gear safely?" We all would love to carry on all our outdoor gear for its own protection. Unfortunately, that isn't always possible.

I found myself in that position early in September as I packed for the Tour of Mont Blanc in France. I knew carry-on was not going to work since we were bringing two sets of hiking poles. I was lucky enough to be able to get a sample of Eagle Creek's Cargo Hauler Duffel. At 90 liters it was just long enough for our hiking poles to fit inside and being wheeled, I knew I wouldn't have to carry all the weight that would be in it.

Because this trip wasn't just going to be a 100-mile hike, but city and country touring as well, I had to pack two totally different sets of clothing and shoes. Once I had packed all of my items, I actually had to take some of my wife's things in order to fill the duffel, it's that big.

I had already found out that because the duffel has no internal frame it pulls much easier if it is packed full. The wheels are enclosed in a durable plastic housing that gives the bottom structure when being pulled. Filled up it rolled really nice and it was easy to navigate through airports, onto trains, and into hotels.

The Bi-Tech Armor Lite fabric held up so well it still looks like new. Reinforced and padded grab handles located at each end and on one side allowed me to pick it up in a variety of ways. The large #10 lockable zippers worked well and the duffel's u-shaped opening makes packing and unpacking easy. A separate zippered compartment at the top end was used for hiking boots but is easily large enough to handle a ski helmet.

When not in use the duffel can be rolled up and stored in its own handy storage sack. The Cargo Hauler Duffel worked really well for this type of trip and I look forward to using on some upcoming ski trips. Eagle Creek also offers this duffel in a 120-liter size.
