EMS Tempo GTX

rated 4 of 5 stars

The Tempo GTX has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best hiking boots for 2024.

A sturdy and attractive boot but with an unpleasantly stiff and rigid structure that makes them uncomfortable to wear for long periods. These look like dayhikers in the style of Montrail's Stratos or Vasque's Breeze boots, but the appearance is deceiving. These shoes are much sturdier and firmer than the typical dayhiking boot, and are well suited for rough terrain and sharp rocks. The downside of this sturdiness is that the shoes feel tough and unpleasant for extended wear, and show little increase in comfort even after several months break in.

The shoes are unwearable with light hiking socks and become tolerable only with thicker socks. Traction and waterproofing is excellent, but the shoes do not breathe well and will become very hot inside even in cold weather. As a result, I would regard these only as winter boots. The boots are sturdy and age well, though with some slight cosmetic delamination on the toe rand on one boot (though waterproofing is not compromised).

All in all, these are very sturdy shoes ideal for tough terrain in cold weather. Do not consider them for warm weather, or if your feet are hot. The harsh stiffness never goes away though so only those who do not need much comfort should consider these. My main issue is with the price - $120 puts you within price range of numerous other name brand boots from Garmont, Lowa, Vasque etc that are all about as capable and far more comfortable than the Tempos. EMS should cut the price on these by $20-$30 and maybe work on refining comfort a bit.

Great boots, especially for those who like more room in the forefoot area. Excellent waterproofness and traction. Well done.
