Surprisingly durable, decent hatchet.

  • Durable
  • Useful saw

  • Blade shape
  • Saw retention

The Gerber Gator Axe 2 is a decent hatchet (despite its name, it really falls into the hatchet category), albeit nothing special. The hatchet does what a hatchet is designed to do, and while the blade shape isn't the most practical, it's certainly serviceable, as long as you realize it will take a little more effort to get the same results that you would have with an Estwing, American ax, Wetterlings, etc.

The hatchet is surprisingly durable, considering it's all plastic, and has a hollow handle to accommodate the saw. The saw is very good, and is quite useable on trees up to 4in in diameter. The magnet that holds the saw in the handle isn't very strong, however, and there's a real chance of losing it if you don't pay attention.

I used this hatchet for years and it worked fine. I've just upgraded to better tools. For car camping, this hatchet will serve you well, but for bushcrafting, trekking, and backpacking, a better axe/hatchet with a seperate folding saw would be the way to go.

- Mountains Plus

The Gerber Gator II is a compact all-conditions axe for the outdoor adventurer. Made with a longer handle than the original Gator, the advantage is a greater striking force with the stainless steel head. The handle is made of glass-filled nylon and covered in Gerbers Gator texture. It offers a better and more comfortable grip in wet and muddy conditions. The handle also has a hideaway coarse blade handsaw, held in place magnetically, for sawing branches and brush. Its a rugged and lightweight camping essential.

When you're planning a two-week backpacking trip or deciding what goes in your bug-out-bag as you prep for the zombie apocalypse, weight matters. Luckily, the Gerber Gator Combo Axe II with Saw is lightweight and uber-versatile. The glass-filled nylon axe handle is longer than the original Gator to give you greater striking force with the forged-steel axe head, while the handle sports Gator texture for a better grip when the rain turns dirt to mud. The bluntnose pull saw stays securely inside the axe handle with an internal magnet, and coarse teeth easily saw through brush and small branches. Don't expect to fell 200-year-old redwoods with this axe (and really, why would you want to), but you'll be able to make a shelter and chop up dead trees for firewood without any trouble with the Gerber Gator axe/saw combo.

This versatile and well-balanced combo of a camp axe and hand saw gives you the tools you need to finish wood-cutting jobs with ease. Give the Gerber Gator(TM) Combo Axe II a try. Polyamide handle is virtually indestructible and very lightweight. Space-saving design features a hideaway saw that stores inside the axe handle; patented magnetic lock keeps saw secure but easy to retrieve. Ergonomic design of saw and axe handle fits comfortably in the hand for safer cutting and swinging; Gator textured rubber handles improve grip. Handle design is injection-molded around the axe head to ensure it won't separate or come loose. Durable ballistic nylon sheath protects axe edge and affords easy transport via belt loop webbing on back. Saw also features Gator textured 4-inch polyamide handle and 6-inch steel saw blade.
