Gerber Sport Axe II

rated 5.0 of 5 stars

To reference this, I have the Sport Axe 2, not the Camp Axe 2.

Pros

  • Durable
  • New handle style is comfy
  • Good steel
  • Hammer on back
  • Hallow handle

Cons

  • Saw in handle not super secure in some models

The difference being it is 4 inches shorter, also the Gator Combo Axe is the one with the saw in the handle. That being said, I love this axe! I had a small tomahawk before this from SOG, but it didn't really cut it (ha) in the backcountry.

With its bigger head, more weight and hammer this is the best axe for the money. The size down from this, the Pack Axe 2, is just a bit too little, it is worth it to carry the extra 6 oz.

With this axe I have split wood, chopped down a small (dead) tree, and hammered in my tent stakes and it has never failed me. Just this last weekend it performed like a boss collecting firewood and splitting it for a fire while we camped in the Uintas.

I won't go anywhere without this axe in my pack now, even on a day trip!
