Suunto X9i

rated 1 of 5 stars Save you money—poor manufactuer support! This GPS device was made to support the Suunto brand directly by not providing their product through general retail outlets, and to make the product sealed, preventing customers changing their own battery. This device must be sent to the local national Sunnto-owned and operated office for battery change. This product is priced-fixed through Suunto authorized dealers only. A MAP price is forced on those Suunto-authorized dealers.  They are not allowed to… Full review

Magellan eXplorist-710

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Does the job and works under heavy bush canopy, though there is a steep learning curve to master this device. Consumes batteries ravenously. My first 12-channel high sensitivity GPS, so I was very impressed to see it work in dense bush. However in hindsight this is to be expected these days. I found the system very difficult to learn despite having worked in IT for 10 years.  After four years of hard use the cover over the rubber button has worn off rendering the GPS usable but no longer waterproof. Garmin inReach Explorer+

rated 4.5 of 5 stars If you're looking to combine your messaging and GPS needs into one device, this is it. I've acquired this GPS for a solid price of $300 through incentives of my workplace, and its the best $300 I've spent on gear. This GPS has accompanied me on any challenging hike, backpacking trip, backcountry skiing, or any trip into the mountains.  Communication (Requires subscription) As shown in some pictures I've uploaded, this GPS doesn't anything special in terms of features. But what it does do it does… Full review

Garmin Foretrex 601

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is an excellent GPS for outdoor, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, backpacking, and military type use. The small form factor, good battery life, and ease of use along with the ability to customize some screens to give you exactly the data you want at a glance makes this unit my #1 pick for outdoor adventures. I purchased this GPS to use primarily on hiking and backpacking trips. Opening the box and removing the device is pretty straightforward. Setup was easy and the system and button layout… Full review

Garmin eTrex 10

rated 1 of 5 stars Poorly designed GPS. Thumb stick on the e-Trex 10 does not work. Pressing it straight down is supposed to be the equivalent of ENTER. It takes numerous tries to achieve enter. The screen features are not distinct. This a very poor product that deserves a recall from GARMIN. I am trying to get my money back. Full review

Suunto X9i

rated 2 of 5 stars I have owned two (2) X9i watches for several years which I purchased when on a cruise. After a couple of years the wristbands started to break and chip. Wristbands on the watch housing are made out of rubber. Every year afterward the wristband started to chip and break more frequently. Paying the amount for two watches you would think the rubber parts of the watch would last more than a few years. I recently called for service and the service dept. said that it would cost between $45-$65 to replace… Full review

Garmin vivosmart HR+

rated 2.5 of 5 stars The Garmin Vivosmart HR+ is definitely not perfect, but packs a lot of useful features into a relatively compact package. I have been using the Garmin Vivosmart HR+ for about a year now, mainly for day-to-day health tracking and hiking. Here is a summary of what I think is good and bad about it. ProFeatures: Provides lots of features including step count, heart rate, GPS tracking, sleep monitor, Bluetooth connectivity, notifications from phone and control of music on phone (I don't use this). Size:… Full review

Garmin eTrex 30

rated 3 of 5 stars It's a scam. When you pay $150 for a GPS you expect at least it would ship a decent map with it. But, no, it came with a map that doesn't even show road to your home. Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh. I think the unit is quite sturdy, and the satellite acquisition is fairly fast. It's one unit, provided you carry enough batteries, that can get you home. Every time I read about someone gotten lost and died on the trail, I always asked, why did not he or she invest in a GPS. This is my investment… Full review

Garmin eTrex 10

rated 3.5 of 5 stars If you're a beginner, you'll find the quick startup and owner's manuals woefully inadequate. I had to call Garmin twice just to find out how to get the page that shows me how far I've hiked. I've used a Garmin GPS 60 for years, so I'm not a beginner. When my GPS 60 died, I couldn't find a simple GPS that would tell me how far and how fast I've hiked. The GPSes were expensive and extremely complex. FINALLY, the eTrex 10 showed up—just what I'd been waiting for! However, the instructions (quick… Full review
