Garmin Fenix

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I took this guy out for our first field test on the Buffalo River a few weeks ago. Really great watch for the avid outdoors man. The trackback feature came in handy several times on that rocky terrain. The storm alarm was a lifesaver too. The river rose 5 feet during the night! The Garmin Fenix is the product for you if you are heading outdoors. If you like to bike, hike, run, fly, swim, float, or fish then this little package has a lot to offer. It has multiple profile settings that you can choose… Full review

Rand McNally Foris 850

rated 4 of 5 stars Great GPS for under a $100. Does everything I need. I bought this for around $85 shipped from Amazon for rattlesnake hunting the mountains of Western Pennsylvania, geocaching, and for hiking with my wife and daughter. With all honesty, I've only had one other GPS and it was a Magellan Sport I found it to be worthless. So I have nothing else to compare it to. This thing is very easy to use. It picks up satellites very quickly. It is loaded with maps for trails, forests, and bike trails, etc. It is… Full review

Garmin eTrex 30

rated 3 of 5 stars Reliable route finding GPS with great graphics, however its weight and limited battery life make it better for geocaching than backpacking. This was given to me as a gift and I was very excited since I'm a big fan of Garmin's Zumo motorcycle GPS. In spite of some great features, I'm glad I didn't spend $300 USD on it. I've found the accuracy to be good in the backcountry, and the track back feature works flawlessly. I also like the setting that automatically inserts way points into your route… Full review

Garmin Fenix

rated 5 of 5 stars The Garmin fenix GPS watch is almost in a category all it's own (the Suunto Ambit series is the only other real competition from what I could find). You can't compare this to any of the typical fitness GPS watches as this does SOOOO much more. This watch is a land-navigator's dream. I think it's important to start by clarifying that I'm reviewing the fenix as a tool for a specific job. Example: I noted in my "Cons" that the fenix needs an external antenna when under tree cover. In other words, if… Full review

DeLorme Earthmate PN-60

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This was the first handheld GPS I owned. I started with the PN-60 and upgraded to the PN-60w so I can use with the Delorme inReach unit. I liked both versions of the GPS and found it very reliable. Great for hiking, boating and biking. This was the first handheld GPS I owned. I started with the PN-60 and upgraded to the PN-60w a year later so I can use with the Delorme inReach unit (three years total). I liked both versions of the GPS and found it very reliable. I use my GPS everywhere. The unit… Full review

Garmin Forerunner 301

rated 5 of 5 stars I've used and abused this thing for almost a decade, mainly for cycling. I strap it to my top tube and off I go. I love the ability to upload the ride onto the Garmin Training Center application and gather my ride metrics (speed, average speed, climbing and descent data) and overlay it on a map. This has been one of my favorite training aids. I used to wear the heart monitor but stopped after a while because I was having trouble getting a reliable signal. Plus the chest strap was annoying so I didn't… Full review

DeLorme Earthmate PN-60

rated 1 of 5 stars Only buy to use with inReach. All Delorme software is a pain to use. They do not follow any standards, pgs screen is small, treats multiple tracks as one big one. Make me an offer, I'll sell you mine and the inReach for cheap. Full review

DeLorme inReach

rated 4 of 5 stars The Delorme inReach is a versatile 2-way communicator that allows you to stay in touch when you're off the grid. An essential piece of kit for the adventure traveller! Used the inReach on a 23,000 km motorbike ride through Europe. Tracking feature is flawless, creates a beautiful trail on the online map for others to view my progress in quasi real time. Texting feature works well through smartphone although email is a bit onerous for the person at the other end with the need to go to a specific… Full review
