As a guide for several years, I've used many packs, thrashed many packs. This is the greatest pack, bar none. It's held up to 2 years straight of guiding in the Utah / Colorado / Idaho area, from desert canyoneering to mountaineering and everything in between.
It's built like a tank, really comfortable, compresses to a tiny cragging pack and expands to fit 8 days worth of guide gear. I've asked my local shop, Mountainworks, to order me at least two packs so that if Grivel pulls out again I have enough.

Free Shipping. Grivel Alpine 55 Pack (Fall 2008) The Alpine 55 Packby Grivelis a medium/large sized rucksack, 55 lt + 15 lt. (extension), for alpinism and ski touring made with the new VX21 Carbon Composite fabric, used in sails technology. Composite materials are engineered materials that don t occur in nature: the 210 Cordura laminated in a five ply sandwich with Dacron X-Pac fabric used for the basic structure is reinforced with netting in Dacron, increasing the material s mechanics without making it heavier. The dark netting, easily visible and touchable on the fabric, increases rip resistance even when subjected to prolonged and heavy use. It also gives excellent structural stability not just to the fabric itself but to the whole rucksack. Real progress in quality standards. This fabric is 200 psi waterproof. The zipped opening on the front of the rucksack makes it easy to pack, or unpack, starting from the bottom upwards! Interior gear loops to distribute weight in the most stable position: towards the back. Internal pocket for hydration bladder and exit for tube. Two quick snap ice tool attachments. Side compression straps and ski slots. Large pockets on the hood. The top pouch can be taken off and used as a bum bag. Fixed back panel with cross shaped furrows permitting air circulation. Simple waist belt with two clever quick snap ice tool attachments that doesn t interfere with a climbing harness. The waist belt can be easily removed Weight: 1805gr. /63,6oz Naked: 1275gr. / 44,9oz
