Kelty Gunnison 3.2

rated 4.0 of 5 stars
photo: Kelty Gunnison 3.2 three-season tent

This a great all around tent for dual service car camping and backpacking. It held up well in strong wind, in hard rain and in hail the size of jawbreakers.

Pros

  • Long enough for my 6'2" and growing son.
  • Super easy setup.
  • Two doors. Nuff said.
  • Sturdy and dry in challenging weather.

Cons

  • Weird little windows inhibit views
  • Zippers require two hands.
  • Vestibules could be bigger.

We bought this to backpack with, but it has become the go-to tent on our arsenal. It's good sized and roomy for two large people and gear. It has pretty good headroom and splits easily to share weight backpacking.

On three different trips it experienced pretty harsh weather and held up like a champ. It is well ventilated, but stays dry inside. I love the two doors, so we don't have to crawl over each other. The vestibules are adequate, but a bit larger would be nice for room to cook in harsh weather.

The zippers on the door are a little wimpy. It would be nice if it were a more beefy zipper — to be able to zip the door shut with one hand. Somehow it won't turn the corner without holding the backside. Of course, larger vesitbules and more beefy zippers add weight, so these are small things to us.

On a silly note, it fits into the stuff sack with room to spare. My pet peeve is when they short you on an inch or two of fabric and you have to wrestle the dang thing into the sack every time. I'm glad we chose it and plan to use the heck out of it for many years.
