Kelty Vortex 3

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Vortex 3 has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best three-season tents for 2024.

To explain the 3 person size, I bought this tent for 2 people and 2 dogs (and all of us can get grouchy if there's not enough room). It could possibly fit 3 people but you better like each other. It has plenty of room for 2 people and their gear. The vestibules are spacious, but slightly difficult to open when exiting. With the rainfly on, it tends to condensate on the inside slightly but is acceptable.

The first time out, this tent was put to the test. Camping in Grayson Highlands State park/MT Rogers NRA we were subjected to 40+ mph winds (1st night) and a suprise early morning thunderstorm that produced 2-3 inch deep pockets of standing water under the floor (2nd night). Under both conditions the tent performed flawlessly.

The design of the Vortex series tents are excellent and include several amenities, such as 2 side doors and 2 vestibules, gear loft, bathtub flooring, gear pockets, and quick connect straps for securing open vestibules and doors separately.

The only drawback (for the unlucky soul which is usually me)is the weight 7+ lbs. But considering when you're backpacking with someone else there are many options for sharing the load.

Considering the price and features, this was a great buy and it is highly recommended.

Design: 3 Season

Ease of Setup: Easy with 1, Piece of cake with 2
Weight: ~7 Ibs
Price Paid: $175 on sale

I originally purchased the Vortex rated for three people as an oversized backpacking tent for two people. The idea of an entrance/exit for each person sold me on the tent, but when I go solo the extra (and very large) vestibule is like having an entire closet for storing any extra gear.

Two years ago got caught in the midwest in the remnants of one of the Florida hurricanes: 8 inches of rain in 24 hours. Stayed bone dry, and the tent easily stayed 10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature. It's a great tent for the money; if you find one used in good condition, go for it.

Design: three-season backpacking
