MontBell Alpine Light Down Vest
Source: bought it new
Price Paid: $100
Well fitting super light core insulator.
- Good fit
- Large armpit holes (helps breathability)
- Short hem (torso) length
This vest is 800 fill with a lighter ripstop shell with dwr finish. It has two internal dump pockets, (great for gloves or something you want to keep warm or dry out) and two fleece lined zippered hand pockets (down on the outside of the hands when inserted.)
It has a drawstring hem with cord locks and a 3 inch fleece lined collar. I got a medium and the fit is snug (5.10 175 lbs) but the larger arm holes alow lighter layering underneath without restriction. The larger arm holes also allow great armpit venting and this makes it a great layering piece. If I was goiing to layer more than a light shirt underneath I would size up to large, but as a core insulator it should fit snug to trap heat.
It is very compressible and light, very pleased with the quality. I wish the vest was a little longer at times in the torso, especially when I wear it without an over layer.
Where to Buy
Here's what other sites are saying:
The Mont Bell Alpine Light Down Vest gets roughly 10% lighter and softer without sacrificing durability! Functional mid-layer's flaunt characteristics essential for comfortable backcountry activity: optimized warmth to weight ratio and exceptional compressibility. The secret to the warmth of these garments not only relies on the high lofting 800 fill power goose down, but the inherent wind shedding ability of the silky 20-denier Ballistic Nylon shell. By blocking a large percentage of wind, a relatively light layer conserves the heat your body is naturally producing. Designing outdoor clothing with warmth to weight ratio in mind is great, but we also like to think the Alpine Light pieces succeed when it comes to warmth to dollar ratio.
When your alpine ascent requires additional core warmth, the Montbell Men's Alpine Light Down Vest is there for you at an inexpensive price. And just because it's inexpensive doesn't mean it's lacking. You stay warm when you belay your buddy with 800-fill goose down insulation toasting your core. Ballistic fabric wraps up this wonderful insulation with a surprising amount of durability too, so you get to keep this vest for many years. And you can compress this beauty into its stuff sack when the weather warms up on the wall. The Alpine Light features elasticized cuffs to prevent those blustery winds from breezing in, and a drawcord at the hem keeps in all that wonderful warmth. A microfleece collar offers all-day comfort that won't rub against your chin uncomfortably. And Montbell lined the hand-warmer pockets with fleece to keep your hands cozy as well as warm when you get to the top of that mountain.
