Raichle Spirit III GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

Raichle is no longer in business, and the Spirit III GTX has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best backpacking boots for 2024.

Great boot. Fits me very good, great support carrying 50 pd pack. Waterproof in streams, rain, and snow. Used Nikwax Aqueuos on leather instead of recommended nubuck nikwax. The Aqueous will dramaticaly darkin and mat the leather, but in my opinion works much better. The GTX is great if the leather becomes sacurated. Only down side of the GTX with all leather boots is that your foot will get a little warmer , bonus for colder days.

Materials: Nubuck leather w/GTX lining
Use: Day hiking, back packing 7-10 days
Break-in Period: 15-20hours
Weight: 3.4pds

This is my second pair of Spirit boots. The first pair was comfortable and secure, but the toe box collapsed after three years of pretty hard use (rugged backpacking and dayhiking). I decided the boots were nice enough that I'd replace them with another pair. Wish they'd last longer, but maybe that's the tradeoff for an easy, painless break in period.

Materials: leather, gore-tex liner
Use: rough trail with heavy pack, cross country
Break-in Period: none
Weight: 2 lb 15 oz
Price Paid: $169
