Purchased these boots through Sierra Trading Post at a ridiculously low price. I took the risk of the boot not fitting well and it paid off. I already own Scarpa Laser AT ski boots, and know which size fits me well. Luckily their ski boot sizing and hiking boot sizing seem comparable.
My boot background:
I have broken-in and owned a pair of Trezeta Mid-weight full -grain leather boots for 10 years. They were unfortunately stolen from me a few years back. I know and understand what makes a high quality boot and how to take care of it as well. Finding these Scarpas for cheap, I decided to go the heavy-duty, full break-in required route again.
The boot is incredibly well-constructed. The leather is perfect and there are only two seams used in construction, located on the heel section of the boot. A lighter nubuck is used at the collar and around the tongue, which looks like it will last a long time. Mid soles are heavy-duty, high-density rubber that looks like it will outlast the leather. Outsoles are by Skywalk, but are branded 'Scarpa'. The first set of eyelets are standard D-ring types, the rest are a more modern and hefty looking D-ring that I was at first suspicious of, but seems like they will work at least as well as original D-rings. Lining is a tough bushed polyester material which looks like it will provide excellent wicking and wear ability. The insole is a standard Scarpa one of foam with relatively good arch support.
My foot is a little below normal in volume and these boots seem to fit well from that point of view. I have to tighten the laces a little past their normal position when wearing thin socks. Thicker socks used in winter hiking fit almost perfectly. There is plenty of room in the toe box, so having your toes jammed into the front of the boot shouldn't be a problem unless they are too small.
After breaking in and using these boots for a few more months, I will update this posting and share my results.
I feel, especially for the price, that these are a great buy and should last a very long time, though will require some serious breaking in. To be noted is a slight smell of glue that I have experienced from other shoes in the past. I think this results from the boots being in the box on a shelf for a long period of time. I will update later if this slight odor goes away. You can only notice it if sitting still in a calm room for long periods of time.
