Voile Mini Shovel

rated 5 of 5 stars If you are going winter camping and not carrying one of these (or a comparable model), you are not carrying an essential winter survival tool. The Voile Mini is one of several small snow shovels that anyone winter camping on snow should carry. This is not a full size shovel, but for all that I have done with it, it was the perfect size. I would take mine even on day trips. It is fairly light, has a metal blade, and is well made. The handle comes apart and fits back together easily. It can be used… Full review

Lifeline Alum Sport Utility Shovel

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Lifeline Sport utility shovel may be sold at places like Fred Meyer and WalMart, but don’t let its cheap price fool you. This is an excellent shovel. It is often marketed for auto and snowmobile use. But don’t let that fool you. It is just as, if not more, capable than many shovels many times its price, not to mention a lot lighter. I would highly recommend this to anyone needing a good low cost lightweight backcountry shovel. Works excellent in making snow caves. When I bought this I was… Full review

SnowClaw Guide

rated 2 of 5 stars Having seen but never owned a Snow Claw this is not a review but a warning: NEVER substitute a Snow Claw for a shovel when traveling in avalanche terrain. There is simply no comparison in the amount of snow moved. Full review

SnowClaw Guide

rated 5 of 5 stars YES! Long story turned short, I dug out a snow cave with one of these. It is awesome. Moves a lot of snow, but not as much a conventional backcountry shovel. Totally worth it though. Full review

Voile TelePro Shovel

rated 5 of 5 stars It changed my life. I can't believe how incredibly awesome this shovel is. I can't imagine my life without it! Full review

SnowClaw Guide

rated 5 of 5 stars When I was a kid growing up on the beaches of San Diego, I would always use a strong frisbee to dig holes on the beach. It was much faster and more powerful than any of my friends using a shovel. I was in the market for a shovel this winter, and noticed this innovative item as an alternative to a snow shovel at REI. I was able to test this powerful tool in crusted snow and 4 feet of powder alike last weekend on a snowshoe trip. It is so much easier to use in all but the most icy of snow conditions. Full review

Black Diamond Deploy 3

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I have used this shovel for two trips into the White Mountains early this year (January and March). It does well chopping through hard snow, with no worries of it breaking or not being up to the task. It collapses into a small package and straps easily to the outside of my pack. This is a lot of shovel for 20 ounces. A good piece of gear, and although I never dreamed of paying $60 for a shovel, I'm happy with the purchase. Full review

Backcountry Access A1 Shovel and Saw

rated 4 of 5 stars The shovel itself is great: strong construction, easily collapsible, and the extension feature makes it perfect for snow caving. Now I am able to build both the tunnel and the cave with one shovel. Before I needed two types; a short shovel and a long. If you build many caves, this is the shovel you need. The saw, however, is a different story. I was cutting off a branch (about one inch in diameter) and the saw broke in half. I continued to use the remaining part of the saw and it broke again. It… Full review

Life-Link Pit Boss

rated 5 of 5 stars This shovel is light and unbreakable! I accidentally backed over the shovel head of mine with the car back in 2001 and I still have it in my back country pack ready to go for 2009-2010 season. I doubt an aluminum piece could make that claim. Simply unbeatable. If you know what Lexan plastic is you won't hesitate to get it. I even sharpen it with a file once in a while to keep it sharp for cutting snow easier. I really like the Life Link products for back country use, and recommend them to anyone… Full review
