Zamberlan Civetta II GT

rated 3.0 of 5 stars

The Civetta II GT has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best backpacking boots for 2024.

Version reviewed: Gore-Tex

Good in the beginning but they give you a false sense of security. I hiked 700 miles (across 8 states) on the AT and went through 3 pairs of these boots. I was forced to keep shipping them back to REI. The flaw with these (all 3 pairs) is the Vibram sole’s adherence to the boot. I discovered that if you do serious backpacking and put miles with a pack on the entire center of the sole (including where the Vibam logo is located) becomes loose and an “air pocket” forms. This results in diminished boot stability and allows for rocks (esp. in PA) and other sharp objects to pierce the sole. These boots were fine when I was doing some day hiking and light packs but if you want a long distance boot I would NOT recommend them. Funny thing is the leather and sole are great but they didn’t mount them well.
