Backpacker's Pantry Chicken Piccata with Tagliatelle Pasta

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Backpacker's Pantry Chicken Picatta with Tagliatelle Pasta is a very filling, bold-flavored high-protein lemon chicken dish with noodles, capers, and parmesan cheese.   Backpacker's Pantry added several tasty new meals to their lineup this year and I was able to test three of them. The others that I tested were the Nicoise Salad with Salmon and Chana Masala. Of the three, I liked the Chana Masala the best, but all three are good and worth a try if you like these types of food. Nutrition   Ingredients… Full review

Backpacker's Pantry Nicoise Salad with Salmon

rated 4 of 5 stars A fresh alternative to the typical salty noodle-based dehydrated meal, the Backpacker's Pantry Nicoise Salad has lots of healthy, whole ingredients that make a very refreshing backcountry meal. Backpacker's Pantry added several tasty new meals to their lineup this year and I was able to test three of them. I found the Nicoise Salad to be the most interesting, so I'll start with that. The others that I tested were the Chicken Picatta with Tagliatelle Pasta, and Chana Masala. Of the three, I liked… Full review

Good To-Go Thai Curry

rated 4 of 5 stars Excellent flavor and easy instructions offset the long wait time. This was my personal favorite of the two Good To-Go samples I tried, but had similar hydration issues (no more than other meals of its kind). Note:  Some of the text below is similar to my review of Good To-Go’s Smoked Three Bean Chili but most of the detail is specific to this meal. I did this review to supplement Lah’s excellent review of the meal and to give another non-biased account of experience with it. No offense to other… Full review

Good To-Go Smoked Three Bean Chili

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Coming from someone who is not a fan of packaged dinners—this was good! Easy instructions and good flavor, with only a few less hydrated/crunchy pieces. A great vegetarian alternative on the trail. I did this review to supplement Lah’s excellent review of the meal and to give another non-biased account of experience with it.  No offense to other reviewers, but several seem to be related to the company in some way.  First off, when evaluating food choices I think it is a good baseline to describe… Full review

Campfire Meals Rice & Chicken Tortilla

rated 4 of 5 stars I was ordering some quickie meals for winter hiking, and decided to write a review of one of our favorites. The Campfire Meals Rice and Chicken Tortilla, in a 2-serving pouch, is a nice quick option, and among the best of the commercially prepared, freeze-dried foods we have used. This freeze-dried entree has a 7-10 year shelf life. I do not actually recall how I came to be aware of this company (a subsidiary of, but I think it was from a twitter chat they used to administer. I… Full review

Redd Superfood Energy Bars

rated 3 of 5 stars A new 10-gram energy bar that includes a host of Superfoods. Also packed with quite an assortment of vitamins and minerals. R.E.D.D. or Research Enhanced Design and Development is a relative newcomer to the large field of energy bars. What they have done to separate themselves from that field, is to pack each 56-62 gram bar with superfoods, vitamins, and minerals. Three flavors are offered: Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate. Each bar supplies 10 grams of protein and 220-230 calories per serving. Full review

Packit Gourmet Santa Fe Breakfast Corn Pudding

rated 5 of 5 stars This is the best pre-packaged breakfast that I have eaten on the trail. I have sampled many other dehydrated and freeze dried breakfast items over the years, and have not repurchased any of them. The Packit Gourmet (PIG) Santa Fe Breakfast Pudding is the first one that will be a regular in my trail food rotation. Summary: I usually test gear multiple times, but this breakfast meal was so good a couple of weeks ago that I thought I would share it with everyone before the colder months really set… Full review

Backpacker's Pantry Charros Beans & Rice

rated 4 of 5 stars This VERY FILLING dinner will stuff the most hungry appetite whether on a quick overnight trip, thru-hike, or even at a long, busy day at work. Backpacker’s Pantry Mexican Charros Beans & Rice has become a game-changer for store-bought dehydrated meals: OK for vegan/vegetarian Ddets, great calories-to-weight ratio, and most of all DELICIOUS! Receiving new items from Backpacker’s Pantry for testing was a nice challenge, being that I’ve been cooking and dehydrating my meals personally for… Full review
