Hi Mountain Hot Caramel Apple Crunch

rated 3.5 of 5 stars We have not reviewed camping meals before. We kinda buy them to have as an easy take along for canoe camping, and we usually use brands that are common and well-known. Recently, I used this item as an 'add-on" to a Sierra Trading Post order. I had never heard of this company, since they specialize in jerky and meats, which we do not eat. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this apple dessert (or breakfast). When canoe camping, we often use freeze-dried entrees, since we often… Full review

Oberta Bacon Jerky

rated 4 of 5 stars Taste great and has the texture of regular bacon. Usually I am not a big fan of jerky as I find most of it too sweet for my liking. Oberta Bacon Jerky is a refreshingly different product. Oberta Bacon Jerky tastes great and has good texture just like home cooked bacon. The jerky is not tough or too crunchy. This jerky is also great for snacking anytime you need a quick protein boost. I like bacon when backpacking, especially for breakfast. The cost for this jerky is very close to the precooked bacon… Full review

ProBar Bolt Energy Chews

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Natural tasting chews filled with B vitamins and electrolytes, which are quite filling compared to other chews. I'd recommend these energy chews for trail runs, training days, or workouts, but there are better options for long trips in the backcountry. I enjoy trail running and have been trying several different trail snacks over the years. Most times I make my own, but decided to get a box of the ProBar Bolt Organic Energy Chews. There are four different flavors (as of July 2015) and like other… Full review

Starbucks VIA Ready Brew

rated 3.5 of 5 stars I'm a coffee snob that normally only drinks "Charbucks" swill when I'm desperate and there are no quality options available. That said, VIA is my go-to source for an enjoyable cup of coffee when backpacking. As I said, I'm a total coffee snob. When at home or car camping, I make my coffee in a French press. But when backpacking, I love VIA.  It weighs almost nothing. It takes up almost no space in my pack (generally it simply fills space that would otherwise be voids in my pack). And there is no… Full review

Mountain House Lasagna with Meat Sauce Pro-Pak

rated 5 of 5 stars My favorite MH entree. I prefer Pro-Pak versions of Mtn House entrees. The portions are just right, and the vacuum packed approach takes up less space in the pack when up high. Otherwise, the content and taste is the same as the regular, 2-person, non-vacuum packed sizes. Boil the water, add and let sit a bit, then eat right out of the pouch, means high efficiency and zero cleanup. After use, pouches form nice closable small garbage bags for packing out. Lasagne has a nice tomato spiciness with… Full review

Mountain House Rice & Chicken

rated 3 of 5 stars I found it a little plain for my taste. I would only recommend this if you like it plain and basic. Good base, probably less impact to your intestines than a Mexican or chili meal. I found it a little plain for my taste. I would use a little less water and definitely add either more spices or maybe some dried fruit or veggies. I think I would use instant rice and a pouch of chicken instead and mix up my own version of chicken and rice. It's easy to make, but I would either try using less water,… Full review

Backpacker's Pantry Granola with Bananas & Milk

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Good backpacking breakfast. Easy to prepare and pretty nutritious. More tasty than most freeze dry packaged foods. Price, like all freeze dry, is fairly hefty. Background: When I started camping, backpacking, and horse packing with my family as a child, there was no such thing as freeze-dry. Your only choice in dried food was jerky for meat, powdered eggs, KLIM (milk spelled backwards – still exists) for powdered milk, and a range of dried fruits and vegetables (raisins, apples, apricots, tomato… Full review

Libby's Seasoned Beef Crumbles

rated 3.5 of 5 stars My son and I actually like this as a complimentary ingredient. Despite the appearance, my son and I like this stuff. We always mix it in with another ingredient. We will either mix in with our dehydrated re-fried beans and rice for making burritos, or we will mix it with bag of instant potatoes for a "hamburger casserole" recipe. We have never eaten this straight out of the bag. Does anyone eat crumbled hamburger as a main dish at home? All in all, my son has used this on several trips, and is currently… Full review

Mountain House Beef Stroganoff with Noodles

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Excellent flavor and texture from a freeze dried meal. The price point is a bit heavy considering I might be able to take a spur trail to the nearest restaurant and buy a fully cooked meal from a wait staff for the same price. Taste: Tastes really good. The sauce is creamy and smooth. The meat reconstitutes well enough. The noodles are soft but not lumpy. Some might find it a bit heavy on sodium, but I like my food salty. Prep: Just add boiling water and wait about 5 to 7 min. Easy enough. Creates… Full review
