Mountain House Mexican Style Rice and Chicken

rated 3 of 5 stars This is a good backpacker's freeze-dried meal — not wonderful, but not bad either. Ah, Mountain House. Brand of bland. Or, if not actually bland, then usually very average apart from a tendency towards over-salted. This, its Mexican Style Rice and Chicken, does not disappoint.  It is not wonderful. It is very average.  But that just means that it satisfies — it quickly and conveniently fills a backpacker's stomach. It was not as salty as many of MH's offerings, was decently spicy, and had… Full review

AlpineAire Foods Southwestern Style Masa with Beef

rated 2 of 5 stars Wow. Spicy. This is a pleasant diversion from the standard freeze-dried backpackers fare, at least in terms of texture. Masa being a corn meal product, it is obviously not a rice-based or pasta dish, and variety on a long trip can be very important. Beef and beans rehydrated well in the listed time. However, there seemed a little too much liquid left over at the end of even an extra "cooking" period. And the level of spice. Wow. Neither my partner nor I could really taste anything other than the… Full review

AlpineAire Foods Key Lime Chicken

rated 3 of 5 stars A decent freeze-dried meal — perhaps not wholly satisfying, but it makes a nice change. One doesn't expect a flavor explosion from a citrus-based chicken and rice dish, and so this does not surprise.  However, there are those days when, after so many faux-mexi meals, a hiker just wants something mild, and a little different. That is what this meal is for.  The key lime flavor is good, but not overwhelming, and the chicken rehydrated sufficiently. The rice, as is usual with freeze-dried rice… Full review

ZonePerfect Fudge Graham Bar

rated 1 of 5 stars If you consider artificially flavored Soy Protein Nuggets as a real food, and your choices lie between starvation and eating ZonePerfect's Fudge Graham Bar, then there is a 50/50 chance you might be able to choke down this "nutrition" bar (nutrition being a relative term here). Straight from ZonePerfect's website: Imagine dipping a crunchy graham cracker into ooey, gooey melted fudge and tossing in the campfire goodness of marshmallows. Yep, that’s exactly what this nutrition bar is like. Except… Full review

Vermont Smoke and Cure Real Sticks

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A healthy, responsible product from a cool company that, with a little tweaking could be great. Vermont Smoke and Cure Pepperoni I admit that I dearly love pepperoni, a little too much. Many were the times when I have brought home pepperoni as a treat to the clones to have half of it disappear on the drive. I have made my own sausage my whole adult life and appreciate good ingredients and flavor. So naturally I was stoked that someone wanted me to give their product a testing. Probably the coolest… Full review

Backpacker's Pantry Cheddar Cheese Spread

rated 4 of 5 stars It's not bad if you've had MRE's before. I've eaten enough MRE's in my last job to know that this stuff actually isn't that bad. It's saved a meal or two because they've tasted so crappy from the beginning. Heat it up with the main entrée, such as spaghetti, and add some to it and you've got a bangin meal. Full review

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon

rated 2 of 5 stars They're dried eggs! They serve the purpose of nutrition. Life can be iffy. These meals are the Iffy busters. I bought this single serving Mountain House Freeze Dried Scrambled Eggs with Bacon while browsing in my local Walmart, down the camping aisle. Since I was going to be taking a trip up to the mountains, I thought it would be nice to try. I'm not a big fan of powdered eggs and some freeze dried meals, this was my opportunity to sample the eggs with bacon. Not Bad. Great for camping or emergencies. Full review

AlpineAire Foods Mesquite BBQ Seasoned Chicken with Beans & Rice

rated 0.5 of 5 stars Too salty and acidic. This product has good amount of meat and rice for a meal for a hungry man or couple of not-so-hungry people. But, it is too salty and too acidic so consuming it is a torture. I had to finish it anyway to have enough energy for an intense hike however it back-lashed with unusual thirst. Color of the product is questionable — bright brown-red, does not look natural, though the product does not pretend to be natural. Full review

GU Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Although I'm not an energy gel enthusiast, these gels did a fine job at giving me a little boost when needed. The flavors were pleasing and the texture was thick, but very easy to manage. I've tried two different flavors during two different pursuits. The first being a 5.5 mile city run in hot weather (and I haven't run in a looong time), the second being a 5 mile hike on muddy hilly terrain.  The energy gels were given to me by a GU representative at an urban 5.5-mile race that my brother-in-law… Full review
