Base Camp

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Worth every penny... The trick is to get water flowing. I usually lift the clipped tube up and down a few times to start the siphon action before trying to pour. So I'm not sure that 1 liter per minute is accurate—once flowing, I can fill my two 1-liter Nalgene bottles pretty quickly. The one...sort of...complaint might be that it gets a little heavy and cumbersome to carry back from the spring or stream to the campsite. The first few times I used the bag required a lot of attentive hand switching—and… Full review

Hiker PRO

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Reliable, durable, lightweight, quick and easy to use. Summary Have used the Katadyn Hiker Pro for over a decade and just replaced it a few months ago due to normal wear and tear. The most reliable and high quality water filtration system at a light weight. Best filter for mountain and desert use. When others were waiting for their pills to purify the water, I was drinking fresh clear water that tastes great. In my opinion, high quality water is essential in the backcountry — measured by the taste,… Full review

Vario Microfilter

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Fast way to filter your water on the go. Easy to use and clean. Great for backpacking. I got my Vario at a store for used outdoor gear called Second Gear. I use to boil my water or used iodine tabs. After a few trips and using other people's pumps I bought it used for about 30 bucks and bought a new filter for about $45 at REI. The dual action piston pumps faster than any other pump. Two settings for the flow allows for fast flow or longer filter life. It is heavier than the chemicals, but with… Full review

rated 5 of 5 stars It's prone to a stuck check valve, but after much searching, I discovered a company, Smart Products, that has a simple and quick fix for the problem with the insertion of their double-barbed, one-way valve for 1/4' hose.  Here’s the information:http://smartproducts.com/ Part number:     304304-0011S000-6019Description:      1/4” Barb x 1/4” Barb CV Polypropylene MaterialPrice:        $6.50     Full review

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Nice filter. I love it, but it takes some effort to pump. Leaks a little at intake hose attachment point when pumping, so be prepared to get a little wet. Used it in shallow creek in Harriman State Park in N.Y., and the the pump filled with dirt. Assume it shortened the life of the filter cartridge. Rinsed the filter well when I got back, and since I was returning to the same shelter area of Harriman the following weekend, I tied a piece of old t-shirt material on the pre-filter and that seems to… Full review
