Bergans Men's Tufto Pants

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Except in the case of extreme cold or heat the Tufto Pants do everything I need pants to — from hiking and climbing to skiing and biking. Over the years I have gone from very low expectations for pants (wearing blue jeans in the mountains) to very high. I have gone from backpacker only to climber and minor mountaineer.  Disambiguation: The term “Bergen” is a generic term for any military backpack in the U.K. The term was used to describe the backpack style favored by skiers in Bergen, Norway. … Full review

Patagonia Men's Alpine Guide Pants

rated 4 of 5 stars Super comfortable and pretty close to indestructible. Combine that with Patagonia's dedication to sustainability and these pants are almost perfect. Cost is the drawback. First, this pant is so durable that the belt, closure, zipper and elastic will all give out long before the material.  I've pitted it against decomposed granite, sharp objects, and the teeth on snowshoes without a hole or a snag.  Tough, tough, tough! This is a great softshell pant for alpine ventures and winter sports activities. Full review

Mountain Hardwear Women's Winter Wander Pant

rated 5 of 5 stars My favourite hiking pant! Try them, you won't be disappointed. I found these pants on sale a couple years ago and thought I would give them a try. Wow, sure glad I bought them. I absolutely love them! As they are named 'Winter Wander Pant' don't let that mislead you. Yes, they are great for winter as they are a little thicker than your average pant (as compared to the Marmot scree for ex.) but they are great for all year use when out hiking in the mountains.   As we all know, it's not as warm in… Full review

Outdoor Research Women's Ferrosi Pants

rated 5 of 5 stars My go-to for my first spring hike this season! Wooohooo, it's finally hiking season again! I've owned my OR Ferrosi Pants for a year now, and they have made me a very happy hiker! I can't say enough about OR's Ferrosi material. It's lightweight, breathable, and stretches to allow easy movement on steep hiking terrain. The Ferrosi Pants are a great option for spring hiking as they can be adjusted easily as the temperatures change. I appreciate having the full length of the pant on chilly mornings. Full review

La Sportiva Halo Pant

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Breathable yet warm softshell pant well suited for backcounty skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing, or cold weather hiking. The La Sportiva Halo Pants have been a staple of my backcounty outerwear since receiving them in February. Features Out of the box I was impressed with the overall construction of the Halo pants. The material had an ample amount of stretch and there was a soft lining along the inside that was comfortable against the skin. La Sportiva included 5 pockets; 2 side zip closure, 2 front… Full review

Outdoor Research Men's Ferrosi Pants

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent lightweight pants. The thinnest softshell pants I have seen, but a much more substantial feel than the wispy ultralight nylon pants. Some people use these over a baselayer in winter as well, as they are water repellent and wind resistant, but I have the Marmot Durango for that. Full review

Marmot Men's Scree Pant

rated 4 of 5 stars These are fairly light so can be used in warmer weather. The factory DWR is very good but I haven't had them long enough to know how long it lasts. Good wind resistance and fast drying. Great in colder weather as they flex over a base layer well. Not insulated at all tho. Oops, I pretty much said it all in the summary. Full review

Patagonia Women's Northwall Pants

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Very comfortable and warm! This pant has made my ice climbing season the BEST due to being warm and comfortable in our cold Midwest weather. Some complaints noted about the loops being off center for holding the bottom cuff in place to act as a gator.  I rectified this by attaching bungy cord to the loops, this acts a gator and allows for easy knee movement. This year did not present me with wet climbing but I waterproofed these pants anyway. Full review

Salomon Women's Momentum II Soft Shell Pant

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Momentum Soft Shell pant has been my go-to for nordic skiing this season. I bought this pant at the beginning of the season for nordic skiing on groomed trails, but have enjoyed the Momentum in the backcountry as well! The flexible material allows for easy, unrestricted movement, and the fleece insulation is warm yet breathable. It also feels great against your skin.  My favorite feature of this pant is the balance between wind protection and breathability. Climawind material is used only on… Full review
