Patagonia Founder Chouinard Named OutDoor Celebrity of the Year
For the first time ever, the “OutDoor Celebrity of the Year” award was presented in 2006. The award sponsors at Messe Friedrichshafen have created this award to honor an outstanding figure from the outdoor sector. The award jury is composed of journalists from outdoor and design publications.
The jury of expert journalists was composed of Rainer Bommas (Sport + Mode mit Sportartikel-Wirtschaft, Wiesbaden), Regina Henkel (Sportswear International, Frankfurt), Markus Huber (SAZsport, Munich), Barbara Smit (Sporting Goods Intelligence, Bry sur Marne), Gerrit Terstiege (form, Neu-Isenburg) and Martin Zentner (design report, Leinfelden-Echterdingen). Out of 17 total nominations, they selected Yvon Chouinard as the “OutDoor Celebrity of the Year 2006”.
In the outdoor sector, the names Patagonia and Yvon Chouinard not only stand for outdoor apparel and climbing equipment of the highest quality, but also for a visionary business strategy and high degree of environmental awareness. As far back as 1972, Chouinard launched a joint appeal for “clean climbing” with Tom Frost, an aerospace technician and personal friend, developing the aluminum chockstone as an alternative to the conventional piton used in climbing. Since 1984 Patagonia has been involved in environmental protection, promoting worldwide projects by donating one percent of its annual revenue. Yvon Chouinard is an outstanding figure above all because of his contributions to environmental protection — that was the verdict of the six jury members, all of them journalists from outdoor and design publications.
