If you need a lightweight recreational boat that tracks well and is super efficient, then the Hurricane Santee 116 is the kayak you've been dreaming of!
Despite the temptuously-named company, Hurricane welcomes you to a wonderful new world of flatwater kayaks with the Santee 116 Sport. Lightweight and rigid Trylon is thermo-molded into a Swede-form hull to lighten your load on land while adding some speed to inland lake endeavors. Despite being scant on the scale, this Sport stays steady with loads up to 300 pounds, giving you the option taking lots or just a little. With this lightweight and stable craft, you can see Yellowstone in a slightly different light by paddling the lakes in the Santee 116 Sport. Compared to polyethylene boats of the same length, the Santee 116 Sport is a skinny minny, weighing 10-15 pounds less than the competition. Now, you and you alone will be able to tote your boat without needing the assistance of nearby strangers to get your 'yak on and off your car. The Swede-form shape of this warp-resistant piece gives you agility on the water when other boats bottom out, all without wasting the power of your paddle. When you're racing across the water or just cruising, thigh pads ensure any position you choose is comfortable. Adjustable foot braces and the AireStream seat ensure your entire body has a great day on the water. Stash a dry bag in the 10-inch stern hatch, leaving the cockpit free to hold your cooler or four-pawed paddling pal. Safely store your paddle in the rear deck rigging when you pause to take some photos. The stainless steel security bar behind the seat lets you use a cable lock for secure storage or transport.
A bit bigger than the Santee 116, the Hurricane Kayaks Santee 116 Sport kayak offers a little more depth and space in the cockpit plus features made for all-day touring or shorter trips. Perfect for touring lakeshores or lazy rivers, the Santee 116 Sport tracks well and moves efficiently through the water for an enjoyable day on the water. Trylon thermoformed ABS plastic hull material is stiff and light like traditional composite kayaks and offers similar looks, but it costs considerably less. Newly redesigned AireStream seat back is lightweight and incredibly breathable thanks to a contoured support frame covered with soft mesh fabric that maximizes air flow. To adjust the seat back for personalized fit, simply pull seat back forward to unlock, adjust and push back to relock. Crisp entry lines, excellent stability and responsive turning make the Santee 116 Sport an outstanding boat for all-around use. Extra-large cockpit opening facilitates gear storage-an extra cooler, a large dry bag or a midsized, 4-legged friend can come along for the ride. Storage areas on the side of the seat hold beverages and small items such as lip balm, sunscreen and a safety whistle. Stern deck rigging keeps extra gear within easy reach, and bulkheaded stern and bow with watertight hatches keeps items dry. Carry handles ease transport to the water.
I'd buy four of your Santee 116, if you'd just make the cockpit opening longer so we can get our birding gear stowed in easily," wrote JP. We did and he did. The Santee 116 Sport still handles like the incredible 116, but it is 17 inches longer in the opening. You can put fly rod tubes, tripods and other outdoor tools of play in the cockpit with you. Even the right dog can ride in there too. We're waiting for pictures of your cats. The 116 Sport still has a rear Hurricane hatch with watertight bulkhead, and it weighs in at a scant 35 lbs. So go ahead . . . take that extra cooler or dry box with you and make a day of it. Quiet lakes and rivers. Day touring quiet coastal waters and larger lakes. Coastal waters, day trips, overnight tripping.
