Here's what other sites are saying:

From Moosejaw:
"Metolius BRD - Belay Rappel Device (Spring 2008) With the creation of the BRD by Metolius, we have achieved a simple, safe and bombproof belay/rappel device. The principle behind the BRD is very simple: as the load of a falling climber is applied, the carabiner is pulled into the scientifically engineered rope slots and the rope is squeezed between the carabiner and the BRD. The result is that a tremendous amount of friction is generated, allowing the belayer to easily catch long, hard falls with relatively light hand pressure. For rappelling, the BRD will give you a relatively slow and controlled (and we feel safer) rappel. If the rappel is moving too slowly, you can re-orient the device for a speedier descent.Features: A versatile, lightweight belay/rappel device w/engineered rope slots which means added control via increased friction on the rope Single or double rope compatible (8 mm to 11 mm ropes) Increased thermal mass and cooling fins to dissipate heat Hard anodized for longer wear CNC machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum Weight: 2.9 oz. (82 g)"

From Backcountry.com:
"The Metolius BRD Belay Rappel Device's notched ends increase rope friction during a fall to allow for an easy catch, no matter how big a whipper your partner takes. This extra friction makes the Metolius BRD a solid choice for use on skinny ropes, and it works on any ropes from 8-11mm diameter. Metolius also added a thumb press to help you release tension and provide a smooth lower or rappel when time comes to go down."

From Oregon Mountain Community:
"Extra stopping power is what the BRD is all about. Metolius feels that many existing plate-style devices don't provide enough friction for the belayer, making it hard to hang on to the rope in the event of a fall. That's why they engineered contoured rope slots into the BRD, increasing friction on the rope and giving the belayer much more control with less hand pressure. The BRD is both versatile (single or double ropes) and lightweight. The ergonomic horn gives enhanced control while lowering and rappelling. It is easy to operate, has a high strength-to-weight ratio and doesn't kink ropes.A versatile, lightweight belay/rappel device with engineered rope slots that give the belayer added control by increasing friction on the ropeSingle or double rope compatible (8 mm to 11 mm ropes)Increased thermal mass and cooling fins to dissipate heatHard anodized for longer wearCNC machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum2.9 oz. From US Outdoor Store:
"Metolius B.R.D.Our equipment is born out of respect for the sport we love, rock climbing. For the climber, danger and fear are ever-present and undeniable. A true sport, rock climbing means you have everything to lose at any given moment and absolutely nothing to gain . . . except for that indescribable feeling of "being" that every climber knows all too well."
