Recent Solid Fuel Stove Reviews

mKettle

rated 5 of 5 stars A portable hot pot for morning joe anywhere in the world...and a little oatmeal. Purchased online via Massdrop although have had and used other larger units sold under Kelly Kettle moniker.  This one differs as it is extensively anodized, has a wraparound neoprene sleeve for handling and uses a silicone plug to transport water when not heating. Also has base that serves as burning pot and is large enough to hold some alcohol stove units. I used an open Trangia alcohol dish and produced my own… Full review

DIY: Collapsible Cylinder Wood Stove

rated 5 of 5 stars DIY wood burning cylinder stove offers the same functionality as commercial models at 1/10th the cost. Most suitable for family sized tents and groups of two or more backpackers in winter. This DIY (Do It Yourself) stove is not a branded or sold product, requiring the user to collect the parts and build the stove themselves. I built the prototypes for personal use and to instruct Junior Forest Wardens (children) to make it themselves. As I do not have the time to make them for sale, I have provided… Full review

Vargo Hexagon

rated 5 of 5 stars A great pocket wood burning stove ideal for boiling water and simple cooking. Well thought out design means a fire is burning in a very short space of time. It can also be used with an alchohol burner making it a versatile source of heat. There are many wood burning stoves on the market as individuals around the globe think they have discovered the 'holy grail' of wood burning stove design. The market is saturated; especially now that Chinese and Russian imitations are flooding the market. The Vargo… Full review

BioLite CookStove

rated 2.5 of 5 stars The top hook melted the fourth time it was used. Prior to that it was a lot of fun being able to burn wood both for cooking and having the ambience of a fire. I have only had the Biolite for a few days however it has already melted the top hook so I now can't remove the fan unit. Prior to that I used it at home and at a friend's house and cooked up some chicken on a frypan and the heat level was great once it was going well. It does burn through wood fairly quickly, however you can just build up… Full review

BioLite CampStove

rated 4 of 5 stars The BioLite CampStove is a very good backpacking stove with excellent charging capabilities for your electronic devices in the field. Well thought out accessories for the stove are available including, the Kettle Pot, a flexible LED light, and a very functional grill. Every time I'm in the backcountry the BioLite is my go-to stove. Not 5 stars because of the lack of more than two fan settings (easy to burn food on High setting). I first saw this stove advertised as a popup ad on a social media site… Full review

Emberlit UL Titanium

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Very nice and everything the previous reviewer had noted. The most glaring negative not mentioned was the sharp edges. Wear gloves if you can, especially the first few times you assemble and break down the stove.  Full review

Seek Outside Titanium Wood Stove - Medium

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Lightweight, packable, easy to assemble, titanium wood stove for hot tent winter camping. Not a cheap investment, but if you enjoy winter camping and getting out in the snow well worth the cost. I had bought 12 yards of silpoly seconds for a great price and decided to sew myself a hot tent. So after looking at some different stove options I decided the Seek Outside Medium Titanium Wood Stove would be the right size for what I had in mind. It isn't the cheapest, nor the lightest available, but after… Full review

Esbit Pocket Stove

rated 4 of 5 stars This product is a good alternative to alcohol stoves and butane stoves. It packs up about the same volume as the other stoves, although its shape I think makes it pack better. My first use and impressions of the Esbit Pocket Stove are mixed. In some ways I think it's better than a butane stove and burner or the alcohol stove. Weight is not so much of a factor either way. Meaning, the Esbit stove is light enough, but the solid fuel blocks add up in weight, as realistically you've got to carry one… Full review

Solo Stove Lite

rated 5 of 5 stars Quick easy way for a meal or coffee for one (possibly two) using just a few dry sticks, pinecones, cattails, etc. Very little smoke if tinder is dry. Can also be used with an alcohol stove as backup. A little expensive but well made! Easy to pack and use if tinder is dry. Plenty of flame which you can't really control other than by adding more or less fuel. Can boil quickly in around 5-7 min with dry fuel. Windscreen is adequate and burner is stable on a flat surface. I really like mine! Full review
