GU Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Although I'm not an energy gel enthusiast, these gels did a fine job at giving me a little boost when needed. The flavors were pleasing and the texture was thick, but very easy to manage. I've tried two different flavors during two different pursuits. The first being a 5.5 mile city run in hot weather (and I haven't run in a looong time), the second being a 5 mile hike on muddy hilly terrain.  The energy gels were given to me by a GU representative at an urban 5.5-mile race that my brother-in-law… Full review

Clif Shot

rated 4 of 5 stars I love these Clif Gels! They are amazing for cardio. I should warn you not to consume the Double Espresso Gels or any others that contain 100 mg of Caffeine less than 6 hours before bedtime. I love these Clif Gels! They are amazing for cardio. I should warn you not to consume the Double Espresso Gels or any others that contain 100 mg of caffeine less than 6 hours before bedtime. I took one last night around 5:45 pm, went to bed around 10:30, and woke up at 1:30 in the morning soaked and cold from… Full review

GU Energy Gel

rated 3.5 of 5 stars I have tried all the flavors of the GU energy gel. The one that tastes the best to me are the strawberry banana and the peanut butter. The chocolate is way too filling and the mocha (caffeine in the ingredients) make me feel way too thirsty during the run. Just this year running has become a very successful hobby of mine. While training for my fist half marathon I used GU. The first flavor I used was strawberry banana. The texture was comparable to syrup. The next few flavors I tried were the caramel,… Full review

GU Energy Gel

rated 4 of 5 stars Best tasting gel that Gu offers. Not saying it is the best tasting gel, just it is their best tasting gel. In my neverending quest for a food to eat while trail running I tried these. Unlike GU's regular gels theses are neither as sickeningly sweet nor as pasty thick, these are fine as far as gels go. As far as the nutrition, I don't know if branch amino acids, vitamins and anti-oxidants help or are just marketing mumbo jumbo. These gels did not cause a sugar high/crash and they seemed to provide… Full review

GU Energy Gel

rated 4 of 5 stars Energy gel of last resort. Tastes like a mouth full of frosting. Gu seems to be the best know brand of energy gels so they show up often at races. I've used these during races and have been given packages of them for training and have never had a problem with the formulation. They don't make me sick even on extended runs and they don't seem to cause a sugar high and crash. What I really hate is the taste and texture, like a mouth full of cheap canned frosting.  In the cold it can be even thicker. Full review

PowerBar ProteinPlus Bite

rated 3 of 5 stars Not too great, gets the job done. Tried both varieties of these from steepandcheap. I like the PowerBar take on protein, the triple threat stuff, with three different types of protein for slow, medium, and long term uptake. I'm not sure if it's marketing hype or actually works, it's probably just protein, but at least it's something a little different. With the bites, I figured they were worth a shot, as I was tired of the typical bars and stuff, which are gross. I used these post workout, and as… Full review

Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews

rated 4 of 5 stars Taste great, seem to do the trick for energy. These are as good as energy chews get. I've tried the Clif energy block things and some Gatorade ones, not to mention gels and other stuff, and these are far and away the best. They taste great, kind of like honey flavored candy with a hint of whatever flavor they're selling it as, but not too sweet. They give a good kick, fill you up a decent amount, and the caffeinated ones definitely gave me a little boost when I needed it.   The packaging isn't… Full review

Hammer Nutrition Hammer Gel

rated 5 of 5 stars My go-to gel. I've tried all sorts of gels, some taste like canned frosting, some are too sweet with simple sugars and some try too hard to be natural. This gel is just right. The formula used in this energy gel contains more complex sugars which take a little time to absorb. This means that you get a nice even energy boost instead of the high and crash of gels that use simple sugars. The formula also uses proteins which help with the sugar rush and minimize muscle tissue degradation. I like the… Full review

Clif Shot

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Razz flavor is kinda like sweet raspberry jam, I'd eat it in a PBJ but it's not my kid's favorite, or my wife's. The mocha is a hit with us all. It tastes like awesome chocolate mocha frosting. The caffine level (50mg) is safe for my kids in moderation and my 9-year-old boy and I climbed 3,000 feet in elevation after splitting one of these and we had great energy almost the whole way.  Didn't try the other flavors but these two are our favorites.    These are NOT meant to be filling and anyone… Full review
