Rossignol Men's BC X6

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Very good light-medium-duty off-trail xcountry performance, poor lacing system. I have owned these boots for a few years, but only used them rigorously for one season. Although the performance is excellent for what they are designed to be (medium-duty off-trail xcountry) the very poor lacing system ruins this boot. This is the 5th Rossi nordic boot I have tried with this type of quick lacing/locking system and the 5th one that I hate. With older versions of this basic design I had trouble with releasing… Full review

Rottefella NNN BC Manual

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent off-trail xcountry binding. This setup is much more efficient at classic kick and glide than a 75mm binding. I would not choose the automatic binding if you plan on truly skiing off-trail. The auto bindings will ice up off-trail. The auto NNNBC bindings are probably fine for skiing on broken trails; such as snowmobile trails.  I would recommend sizing up to the NNNBC Magnum binding, if your ski has a wide enough waist. The NNNBC Magnum will give you that much more stability; but it is… Full review

Rottefella NNN BC Magnum

rated 5 of 5 stars Ultimate off-trail xcountry binding. When I say "xcountry" I specifically mean classic kick and glide skiing. This is without a doubt; the best off-trail stride and glide binding available: stable and efficient. This setup is much more efficient at classic kick and glide than a 75mm binding. Choose this binding over the automatic binding if you plan on truly skiing off-trail. The auto bindings will ice up off-trail. The auto NNNBC bindings are fine for skiing on broken trails; such as snowmobile… Full review

Alpina Alaska 75mm

rated 5 of 5 stars Ultimate off-trail x-country boot. I have been an avid nordic skier for more than 30 years. My everyday skiing is off-trail x-country through rolling terrain (with the occasional steep climb and decent). Although I appreciate 75mm telemark equipment when I truly need it; I find it agonizingly inefficient compared to NNNBC for most of the skiing I do. Recently I have struggled to find the perfect boot. I have tried the Rossi BC line; like it; but not enough support. I have been using the Fischer… Full review

Fischer BCX 6

rated 3 of 5 stars Boot materials and design are improving. I have owned this boot for a few years and loved the performance out of the box, but eventually had to abandon them. The older version of this boot (grey and black) has a serious design flaw. The flex point in the boot pinches and squeezes your foot (metatarsus). By the time I finally gave up on this boot my feet remained tender for a couple of weeks. The new model (brown) has an improved design and materials. Apparently (my close friend has a season on the… Full review

Madshus Epoch

rated 4 of 5 stars Versatile off-trail xcountry ski. This ski is identical to the Karhu XCD 10th Mountain. This ski is marketed as a hybrid between a telemark and a xcountry ski.  Perhaps the best way to review this ski is by comparing it to its two siblings: the Madshus Eon (Karhu XCD GT) and the Madshus Annum (Karhu XCD Guide). First of all, from my perspective, all of these skis are designed to be first and foremost off-trail, classic kick and glide xcountry skis. Yes, they do have a progressive sidecut; they… Full review

Madshus Eon

rated 5 of 5 stars Versatile and efficient off-trail xcountry. This ski is identical to the Karhu XCD GT. This ski comes in either a waxable base or a waxless base. I currently use the waxless base. These are well designed off-trail xcountry skis. I have skied several hundred kilometers on my current pair, with no problems. Although this ski is marketed as a hybrid between a telemark and a classic xcountry ski, it truly excels as an off-trail classic kick and glide ski. Yes, it does have a progressive sidecut; it… Full review

Madshus Annum

rated 5 of 5 stars Ultimate off-trail xcountry ski: trail breaker/deep snow. I have been an avid nordic skier for over 30 years. My everyday skiing has always been off-trail, backcountry, kick and glide xcountry; on rolling terrain with the occasional steep climb and descent. For most of my years I have always assumed that something as fat as the Annum is really a telemark ski and have reserved them for that use alone (with 75mm telemark bindings). (In recent years I have only needed telemark gear a couple of times… Full review

Fischer SCS Classic

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Affordable yet fast, these skis are a great option for an experienced skier who doesn't want to blow the bank. They are durable enough to use as an everyday or marathon ski, and the NIS plate system makes installing or switching bindings a cinch. I have two pairs of SCS Classics. The price versus performance equation makes these skis a no-brainer. If you're a highly competitive racer, you'll want to move up a few models to shave a few grams and get a faster base, but these are great for a casual… Full review
