Black Diamond Women's First Light Hoody

rated 3.5 of 5 stars The Black Diamond First Light Hoody keeps me warm and toasty in the great outdoors. However, the PrimaLoft Silver Insulation Active synthetic insulation lacks the snuggly comfort of down and even some other PrimaLoft jackets I've worn. For this reason, it doesn’t always make the cut when I’m packing my bag for a full day outdoor adventure. Testing Conditions I tested the Black Diamond First Light from late January through April as a member of the Trailspace Review Corps. I wore the First Light… Full review

Brooks-Range Men's Hybrid LT Jacket

rated 4 of 5 stars This lightweight, soft shell jacket offers warmth while reducing the amount of bulky insulation around your arms thereby enhancing mobility and movement. The hood offers further functionality for maintaining core warmth. These factors are very useful in many varied circumstances. Highly recommended. I recommend this lighter weight jacket as a perfect mid or outer layer that keeps your core warm while reducing the bulky insulation around your arms. I ordered a large and it fit as expected—perfectly. Full review

Arc'teryx Men's Atom AR Hoody

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Light, warm, and flexible. The Arc'teryx Atom AR fits true to form and allows for a full range of motion. The extra insulation in all the right places is worth the extra money if you are looking to stay light without sacrificing the warmth. Since purchasing the Arc'teryx Atom AR I have found it difficult to get myself to wear any other jacket in my wardrobe. It looks great and performs even better.  Although I would not recommend wearing the Atom AR as your outer layer if you are expecting to encounter… Full review

Patagonia Women's Nano-Air Hoody

rated 3 of 5 stars I love how comfy and versatile this jacket is, but hate how poorly it has held up. This jacket is super comfy, both for hiking and skiing as well as lounging at home. It is the warm layer that I always want to wear. I bought it to replace a light down jacket and have found that it is closer in warmth to my Patagonia R2 Jacket and that I choose one or the other for outdoor excursions. I think that the biggest bonus over an R2 is that it moves more moisture away from my back so I'm not quite as cold… Full review

Patagonia Men's DAS Parka

rated 3.5 of 5 stars The DAS Parka is a big and burly synthetic belay parka. It is ideal for winter climbing in warm, wet coastal conditions. The DAS Parka is probably one of the most popular belay jackets out there. However, I found it to be disappointingly not warm with a noticeable lack of loft. This is especially noticeable when compared to the weight and bulk of the jacket. I find the cut very roomy with absolutely no need for sizing up to accommodate layers. I am six feet tall with an average wingspan and the… Full review

MontBell Men's Thermawrap Pro Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A well constructed, all-around jacket for layering under a hardshell or wearing standalone. Eliminates having to worry about changing and wet conditions. My Thermawrap Pro hooded jacket is a relatively lightweight and warm jacket when worn by itself or layered under a shell. Montbell's Exceloft holds its loft even after being repeatedly stuffed into a compression sack. I haven't experienced cold spots. In fickle Midwest winters, the Thermawrap Pro has a dual personality... keeping me warm in deep,… Full review

Outdoor Research Men's Deviator Hoody

rated 4 of 5 stars Extremely light for warmth, highly breathable. Very versatile use, from hiking to climbing to biking to skiing. A great light outer layer or warm mid-layer. An athletic fit. A must-have for light, flexible, versatile insulation. Moves moisture away from your body while keeping you toasty on early morning bike rides. A great mid-layer under a waterproof shell. A tight, athletic fit. Full review

Patagonia Men's Nano-Air Hoody

rated 4 of 5 stars The Nano-Air Hoody is a mid-weight insulating layer than can reach across a wider than normal range of temperature and weather conditions. It is relatively unusual in that the synthetic insulation is encased in a soft, stretchy nylon shell that is more stretchy and much more permeable to air than a typical soft shell. Its ability to wick moisture away and 'wear dry' quickly is exceptional for a layer with its insulting properties. Weaknesses include somewhat shapeless pockets that sag when filled… Full review

Arc'teryx Nuclei AR Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Light, compressible, highly water resistant, completely windproof with tape sealed seams. It's also a very good length for my long torso. I recently did a review for the toughest synthetic down jacket you can buy. The Carinthia Alpine jacket. It has reinforced elbow pads and shoulder pads. However it is a little short for me and it is very heavy (940gm!). Both of these problems are solved by Arc'teryx Nuclei AR Jacket. It weighs in at 450gm — less than half the weight. And it fits me perfectly… Full review
