Recent Synthetic Insulated Jacket Reviews

Therm-a-Rest Honcho Poncho

rated 4 of 5 stars The Therm-a-rest Honcho Poncho is an indulgent piece of gear that can shed rain and help keep you warm as a garment or convert into a blanket for more supine endeavors. It is ideal as a wrap for car camping and sporting events or as a throw while lounging at home, but definitely a questionable choice of luxury for backpackers owing to its bulk (16 x 12 x 5 in./ 40.6 x 30.5 x 12.7 cm ) and weight (28 oz/ 794g). Design and Materials: The Poncho Goes Technical The Honcho poncho is essentially a light,… Full review

Montane Hi-Q Luxe Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This jacket screams PERFORMANCE!!! A highly water resistant/windproof mid-weight synthetic jacket that continues to perform when wet, yet still has the positive attributes in a goose down jacket. PRIMALOFT GOLD Luxe synthetic fill is much lighter and more compressible than previously available synthetic fills. Along with a redesigned cuff/sleeve configuration, this jacket excels with temperature regulation, making it an ideal three-season piece of gear for hikers, backpackers, and anyone that loves… Full review

Fjallraven Yupik Parka

rated 2 of 5 stars This jacket lasted two months. This jacket lasted two months. I used it nearly every day for things ranging from ski practice to walking to class. I bought it specifically for the wind and cold that I experience nearly daily during the winter. It was great. Unfortunately after a very wet race weekend it needed a wash and dry. After going through the drier (tumble dry low) the hood came out melted. This is strange considering my speed suit was also in there with it, that being a much more heat sensitive… Full review

Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody

rated 5 of 5 stars The Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody is a lightly insulated, shoulder season jacket with hood to get you through those cooler fall or spring days. It is breathable and water resistant enough to be a part of your gear throughout the summer too. The Atom SL Hoody is a versatile outer layer which I’d recommend for a variety of activities during three-season use. Background & Testing Conditions I am 5'9", 160 lbs, with an athletic frame with 40" chest and 31" sleeve length. I received a size medium spring… Full review

High Sierra Molo Hybrid Jacket

rated 4 of 5 stars The Molo Hybrid Jacket from High Sierra is a lightweight, wind resistant, water resistant jacket that withstands the rigors of the active lifestyle. Features include a special coating to help in water, oil and dirt resistance and a special fabric that allows for excellent venting and wicking. At first glance the High Sierra Molo Hybrid Jacket is nothing special. It looks rather plain in its drab colors and lack of external features, but after wearing this jacket almost daily for over two and a half… Full review

REI Men's Revelcloud Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent Primaloft jacket. Layers well with REI's fleece quarter zip. Packs down into its own pocket, water resistant, and 30 mph wind proof. The product fits great. I got a size larger so I can layer in the colder temps. The jacket has drawstrings around the bottom to tighten in chilly temperatures. Packs down about to the size of a large grapefruit. Great jacket for being outside and backpacking. I am an REI employee and do not speak on behalf of REI. Full review

Black Diamond Men's Deployment Hoody

rated 5 of 5 stars The mid-weight Deployment Hoody is not a layer that I would wear while I trail run, but I love to hike and bike in it during cooler temps. Made from merino wool and nylon, it’s well made and is pretty rugged. While on the more expensive side for such an item, if you can grab it on sale, then the durability, versatility, and comfort will make it worth the cost. Background & Expectations My wife gave me this last year when I was looking for a zippered hoody/jacket to replace an Arc'teryx cardigan… Full review

Outdoor Research Women's Deviator Hoody

rated 4 of 5 stars Versatile jacket perfect for high energy activities. Polartec Alpha insulation in the front of the jacket and waffle grid fleece used for the sleeves, hood, and back. I will admit that it was lust at first sight for me and this jacket. The contrast between the rip-stop nylon on the front of the jacket and the waffle knit fleece on the sleeves was really sharp and the reviews were all favorable. My first impression was that it was incredibly light. My second impression was quickly realized when I… Full review

The North Face Thermoball Pullover

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The usual excellent quality and spendy retail pricing from The North Face. Excellent addition to my cool/cold weather wardrobe, but only because I got it on a close-out deal (not a 2nd). This pullover retailed for more than I wanted to spend, but the reviews, coupled with an excellent deal I found elsewhere convinced me to order. I have been wearing it a few weeks and it's been very good, though not great. I give it 4.5 stars based primarily on cost to performance. For a synthetic, it is very lightweight… Full review
