Recent Synthetic Insulated Jacket Reviews

Outdoor Research Men's Ascendant Hoody

rated 4.5 of 5 stars OR questioned everything, took a couple risks, and ended up making my new favorite mid-weight jacket. "It’s cute, but it looks like you skinned Cookie Monster and made a coat out of him,” said the Mrs. upon her first view of me in the Ascendant jacket. OR may have made the jacket a little odd by removing the traditional smooth lining to expose the insulation but the oddness makes sense when you consider the benefits.  Don’t want to read the entire review? I fell in love with this jacket… Full review

Mountain Equipment Citadel Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Super light, extremely warm winter sports jacket. Allows great articulation for complete freedom of movement. Primaloft insulation provides the warmth in a wide range of conditions. Billed as a full function extreme belay jacket, the Mountain Equipment Citadel Jacket is that and much more. When the Citadel Jacket arrived for testing and review I initially thought it was insulated with down due to its extremely lightweight and puffiness. Upon looking through the spec sheet I was glad to see this… Full review

Craghoppers Voyager Hybrid Jacket

rated 3 of 5 stars The Craghoppers Voyager is a hybrid jacket with a combination of a soft-shell (with Gore-Tex Windstopper membrane) and Thermo Elite synthetic insulation across the front of the body. I found the fit (too short in the hem and sleeve length) and lack of stretch to be the biggest negatives, while the breathability and layering were the biggest pluses. In my opinion it would best suited to someone with a smaller frame looking for a jacket built to transition from the city to light hiking. FIT I found… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Men's Thermostatic Jacket

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This jacket is intended to be a mid-layer under a shell or an outer layer in warmer and less extreme conditions. Water resistant (to a degree). I use this jacket as a three-season puffy jacket (autumn, winter, spring). Fit and Comfort: This, along with the price, makes this jacket a must. The fit is very good—ample enough to accommodate layering, but not too boxy or roomy. I'm 5'7'', 200 pounds, and on a Large, the arm length is a tad long for me, but nothing major. For slimmer people, maybe try… Full review

Patagonia Men's Nano Puff Bivy Pullover

rated 2 of 5 stars It keeps you really hot and it keeps you away from wet. But after ONLY two months that I have bought it, the zip didn't work! Moreover the zip created damage in the texture. This wasn't so funny! SO I decided to change it with another pullover brands! Full review

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Bivy Pullover

rated 5 of 5 stars A staple. Easily one of my favorite pieces of winter gear.   I don’t wear it to hike unless it’s really cold, but I take it in my pack on winter hikes because I love to throw it on when I take a break on the trail.   Fit: I‘m on the cusp between medium and large (damn swimmer shoulders) so I chose a large and the fit is perfect. I love the hood: It is helmet-compatible, allows for full range of motion and visibility. I can layer it on top of a fleece or my Smartwool Corbet 120 Jacket easily. Full review

Smartwool Women's Corbet 120 Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Perfect hiking jacket for cool weather hikes. It appears I got the newer model, which seems to be better fitting overall.   The back and sleeves are substantial Smartwool knit, super stretchy, soft, and breathable.  The front is a sort of nylon taffeta quilted with generous amounts of wool insulation.   The reason I like this one so much for hiking is that since my back is always against my pack, insulation there is not only useless, it also causes overheating and sweating. This jacket fixes… Full review

The North Face Men's Harway Jacket

rated 0.5 of 5 stars Terrible synthetic for the price. Not breathable at all. You will be sweating buckets from walking down the block. For $100 you could do waaay better. It is 100g Heatseeker insulation warm down to 30 degrees. I use it under a Mountain Hardwear hardshell and even under a more dressy wool jacket to add warmth. The North Face men's Harway Jacket is a terrible jacket. The jacket has a casual fit which is a little boxy but not terribly boxy. I am 5'6" and 160 lbs and a medium fits me fine. The jacket… Full review

Nunatak Gear Skaha APEX Ultralight Climashield jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Warm and light, no-frills insulated top. “Winter's Coming”, or so they say. In the U.K. that has means wet and windy, with the odd few days of snow if you are lucky. Body length is good, not being too short, and the cuffs don't ride up when raising my arms. The 13-inch zip makes it easy to get on and off. Elasticated hem which keeps drafts out, could do with an elasticated collar to stop heat escaping.  5.0 oz. Climashield APEX filling is a little bulky, like most four-season synthetic tops.
