Recent Backpacking Boot Reviews

Vasque Exodus

rated 1.5 of 5 stars Great at first, but didn't last! The boots fit well and were great—the first two times I wore them. I wore them on a 14-mile hike last weekend and the sole literally fell off one of the boots. It started to come off the back of the second boot, too. I hiked over two hours on a boot without a rubber sole! Full review

Lowa Trekker

rated 5 of 5 stars Don't go for lightweight boots. I got the earlier model in 1991 and they lasted almost 15 years. Don't make the mistake of buying a lighter LOWA boot. I replaced my old boots with the leather lined Renegade GTX, which resulted in blisters, wet feet, and sore foot soles. Holes have already appeared in the tongue after less than 400 miles. I regularly go on 20-mile day hikes and if you want a certain comfort level there's a price to pay in terms of heavier boots. After only a year I'm looking to buy… Full review

Zamberlan Men's 996 Vioz GT

rated 1 of 5 stars While these boots look and feel great, they have proven useless in my case. After only four walks, I looked at the soles only to see that great chunks of the sole on both boots had broken off. I cannot understand how a boot of this price can have such poorly constructed soles that they fall apart like this after less than a month. These are boots that are clearly well made in terms of the upper. One piece of hand made Italian leather. They look and feel great. However, there is clearly a problem… Full review

Esatto Women's Classic Hiker

rated 5 of 5 stars Your whole body will be in proper alignment. Weight is distributed evenly on hips, knees, and back. There are not pressure spots. Your ankle and feet are comfortable immediately after wearing, even for the first time. If price and lead time is preventing you from ordering your boots, then don't waste any more time—get on it and place an order ASAP. You will not be disappointed. Here is my story: Many sports related injuries, on the same leg have left me with almost an inch difference in length,… Full review

La Sportiva Men's Omega GTX

rated 4 of 5 stars Sturdy, but still relatively light, for heavier loads and rough country. I almost exclusively wear trail runners for hiking or backpacking, but for elk/deer hunting they simply don't work. I was looking for a sturdier boot for elk hunting, but still wanted them relatively light. I tried and returned several pairs of boots due to fit. I need a roomy toe box or it's a no-go. While if I ran in these La Sportivas, I would make the toe box even wider—I find it just roomy enough. Not so with the several… Full review

Meindl Island Pro

rated 5 of 5 stars Had mine nine years, re-soled once, uppers still in excellent condition. Never given me blisters, never leaked, always comfortable. Can't recommend these boots highly enough—no breaking-in period for my pair, always comfortable, never chaffed, rubbed or leaked, offer excellent ankle supper without being inflexible. The uppers have taken nearly 10 years of abuse and are still in superb condition (which warrants the re-soling cost) so including re-soling they've cost me around £30/year and I basically… Full review

Zamberlan Women's 996 Vioz GT

rated 5 of 5 stars Extremely durable and reliable boot. Have worn for three years and have had few problems. I would definitely recommend this boot. I've used it tree planting in thick brush and landscaping and they've lasted extremely well. They've been through mud, puddles, and many overnight hikes and my feet have stayed dry and completely comfortable. The boot fits perfectly and has not rubbed in any places. It did take a bit of getting used to and wearing in though. They grip incredibly well. I've climbed rocky… Full review

Meindl Borneo Pro MFS

rated 5 of 5 stars Great allrounder boot that will last you a long time! Now on my second pair, which I have been using extensively from the treacherous granite mountains of South Korea, to the jungle of Borneo (no pun intended...), to the wet pastures of Norfolk. This boot never let me down and sits tightly around the ankle, perfect when carrying a heavy rucksack and across uneven surfaces. Smart enough for town as well when polished up. Would I consider buying a third pair? Simple answer: Yes! Full review

Meindl Perfekt

rated 5 of 5 stars An excellent, solid boot. I used to wear the old Asolo Yukons and wanted something a little more like them—a bit lighter, with the break-in more along the width for overhang—but could not find anything suitable. The Meindls are heavier, more thickly padded, and wider-cut—so they are a little 'clunkier' feeling. BUT the Meindl Perfekt is an unquestionably well-made boot. Meindl Perfekts deserve, and require, a slow and gentle break-in with good care. I am a fan of Obenauf's, which is working… Full review
