Recent Backpacking Boot Reviews

Alico Summit

rated 5 of 5 stars Strong, reliable, durable, comfortable backpacking boot. Finally, a dependable full leather boot that can be re-soled for "lifetime" use. Interior glove leather cradles the foot and ankle. Footbed needs a Superfeet (black) upgrade, but still works. The Italian Alico brand boots are imported by Sierra Trading Post, and sold through their website and storefronts. Handmade in the Dolomites, by craftsmen. The Summits are pretty stiff straight out of the box, but all good boots are. They break in fast… Full review

Vasque Women's St. Elias GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great boot with stiff sole which provides great foot support. I have plantar fascitiis. I tried different boots, Vasque St. Elias GTX is the boot that provides support that I need for my foot condition and allows me to continue to hike and enjoy the great outdoor trails. Boot does run a tap narrow. Ordered half a size up, took care of it. Full review

Esatto Women's Classic Hiker

rated 5 of 5 stars Esatto boots and arches are great. They are custom made by a professional who is knowledgable and skilled in boot making. Two years ago I had a pair of Esatto summer boots and arches made.   My feet are unusually bad, both are too wide (one is wider than the other) they are pronated, and I have bunions and hammer toes.  I took a chance and had the light summer boot made with arches, and they turned out great.  The boots are exceedingly comfortable.  They fit perfectly, and that was from the… Full review

Lowa Men's Tibet Pro GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars Serious boot for serious environments! These boots are great for the serious tramper (or hiking/backpacking if you're not in New Zealand) or hunter. Very rugged boot and very well made (not made in China but handcrafted in Europe(Germany)). The boots are not insulated, so if you're going into snow country then you best have warm socks or an insulated boot. Breathes exceptionally well — have not had a problem with sweat buildup. Just make sure you take care of them I.E wash them when you're back… Full review

Asolo Women's AFX 520 GTX

rated 0.5 of 5 stars Paid $300, sole has separated. Love the boot, but after sitting in the closet for over year without use the sole has disintegrated. Full review

Asolo Women's TPS 520 GV

rated 4 of 5 stars High ankle, heavy-duty hiking boot for women. Edit 10/19/16: Upon further use and review, my opinion of these boots has definitely improved. They remain hot and heavy, and, lacking a taller lip of rubber at the toe, the leather got banged up pretty quickly. That being said, they were comfortable for the entire trip and gave me lots of support. These boots feel like they're really made to last, so I'm sure I'll be enjoying them for years to come. ********** I recently acquired these for an insanely… Full review

Vasque Women's Sundowner GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars Solid leather, mid-ankle hiking boot. I first acquired my Sundowners in 2003, and immediately loved them. In fact, they were so comfortable, they quickly became my everyday foot attire, not just when hiking or in the woods, but even around school and home. I had them properly sized in an outdoor equipment store, so there was plenty of room in the toe. The GTX has an extra rivet up the ankle from the original sundowners, which helped me get the right amount of ankle support. The boots required no… Full review

Lowa Men's Tibet Pro GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars Lowa men's Tibet Pro GTX boots are my best boots to date. I have been mountain hiking and hunting with heavy packs since the early '70s in my Vasque Whitneys. In all my equipment I pay for great performance and quality without, not just on highest price or name. My Lowa men's Tibet Pro GTX's mid-height boots have four seasons of service and are my best boots to date for non-specialized hunting, backpacking, and hiking use. I have been mountain hunting/backpacking/hiking with heavy packs since… Full review

Montrail Men's Torre GTX

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Good trekking boot. Bought these used in size 15; Normally I wear a 13 so they are a touch long in front and I tend to stub my toe. Otherwise they work pretty well for me. Good arch support and lacing system is excellent. Vibram sole has a sole pattern I would characterize as mud shedding medium traction. Seems to work OK on desert scrubs and rock hiking. Ankle support is not spectacular, but this is a mid-height trekking boot. Not a heavy hiker or mountaineering boot. Not sure this form factor… Full review
