Recent Backpacking Boot Reviews

Alico Summit

rated 5 of 5 stars Classic leather boot. Alico seems not to be phased by the countless companies that moved their manufacturing to China, Thailand, etc and changed the way they made their boots. Seem to have a strong devotion to traditional craftsmanship. These are a very strong, very heavy durable and good looking boot. There aren't too many boots made like these anymore. They are a tad on the heavy side if you are not used to it, but that's what you are getting with this style of boot. I'd definitely recommend these… Full review

Vasque Men's St. Elias GTX

rated 4 of 5 stars Takes a little breaking in. The boot does a wonderful job supporting my foot. After I changed the lacing (I have high arches) they are the best boot I have found for backpacking. They are waterproof so they can get a bit warm in hot weather, it is a very well made boot and I do suggest getting a pair. Full review

Zamberlan 1009 Vioz Top GT RR

rated 5 of 5 stars A really good pair of hunting boots that is worth looking into. I've been wearing these semi-tall boots for the last three years and I am impressed with their consistent performance. Never failed me, no matter the terrain or the conditions. Always kept my feet dry even when submerged into shallow rivers for brief periods.I am a size 42 but the shop owner suggested me to wear size 44. It fit great! Especially around the toe area with room to spare (but not too much I guess). The Vibram Darwin wide-last… Full review

Scarpa Kinesis Pro GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A well made Italian hiking/backpacking boot that comes out of the box ready to go and requires little "break-in" time. Full grain leather with Gore-Tex. Vibram soles are softer and grip uneven surfaces easily. My first pair of Scarpa hiking boots. I liked them right out of the box.  My usual combination of a thin sock under a merino wool sock gave me a perfect fit without any "hot" spots on the first hike. The boots now have 45 miles on them and they continue to show me just how well made they… Full review

Vasque Men's St. Elias GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A solid, well made, very comfortable backpacking boot that doubles as a day hiker on rough terrain. After reading some stellar reviews on the Vasque St. Elias GTX, including its winning Editors Choice as "Best Hiking Boot" from Outdoor Gear Lab, I dove in and grabbed my first pair of all leather pair of boots.  Most of my trail time is spent backpacking but I still get out on a lot of day/night hikes. I wanted a boot that would perform well with both light and heavier loads and the St. Elias has… Full review

Merrell Men's Wilderness

rated 5 of 5 stars Don't let the price put you off. Worth every penny. I have had two pairs over the past 20+ years, which I wear daily (love the ankle support). While the initial investment is rather steep, amortized over 10+ years, $40 per year is about what I would pay for everyday shoes anyway. Seal the sole/shoe interface with snow seal; use Lexol leather cleaner and conditioner to maintain the boots. The Wilderness boot far exceeds my expectations. I will buy yet another pair this year. Zamberlan Men's 730 Gear GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars A little pricey compared to chain store boots, but you get what you pay for. I've owned many different brands of hiking boots over my many years and these are by far the best so far. I wear hiking boots almost every day and when each pair was toast they were replaced with a different brand or style in my seemingly never ending search for the perfect pair. I think I finally found them. When I first tried them on I thought they were a little snug but after just a few minutes wearing them in the house… Full review

Salomon Women's X Ultra Trek GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars Comfortable and rugged. I love these boots. I have a Morton's Neuroma and achilles tendonitis so really wanted a wide foot but with ankle support. I bought the Salomon Quest 4D, which are also very comfortable but they were quite stiff and I found the back of the boot was really aggravating my achilles tendon. I got the X-Ultra Trek and am loving them. They're very much like the Quest 4D but a bit more flexible. Same great grip, in fact the lugs look even more defined and more rugged, also Goretex… Full review

Red Wing Irish Setter

rated 3 of 5 stars My Red Wings are disappointing everyday work shoes because the soles are inferrior. For light duty to occasional duty they are fine. I'm sure the older construction was better. I'm done with cheaply made Red Wing products. Full review
