Recent Backpacking Boot Reviews

Asolo Men's Khumbu

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Excellent boot all-around. Excellent traction in all terrain, completely waterproof. Comfortable and cool. Very good impact resistance, very well-made boot for backpacking, hiking and at-home wear. This is a serious boot suitable for all outdoor enthusiasts. The fit is excellent, both with the original insole and with after-market insoles. The narrow heel provides a stable platform for foot and ankle support, and prevents unpredictable movement and loss of stability of the foot. The lacing system… Full review

L.L.Bean Men's Gore-Tex Cresta Hikers, Fabric/Leather

rated 3 of 5 stars Shank not stiff enough; Toe scuffed badly after one hike; Upper lace hooks cut my finger. This is a review of the Fabric/Leather Cresta. I weigh 225 pounds. With a 40-pound pack the boot shanks flexed, transmitting unwanted surface contour sensations under my feet on/off the John Muir Trail in California. Been using Bean products there since the Reagan years. No fit problems using a Birkenstock 3/4 length insert. However cushioning was an issue arising in bruised and blistered underside of one big… Full review

Lowa Women's Vertex GTX

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Comfortable, super-squeaky boot. Comfortable boot, little break-in period required. I tend to roll my ankles easily and so was attracted to the extra ankle support provided by the plastic ankle "cuffs." However, contrary to what another reviewer claimed, these do squeak. They squeak with every single step and every single movement. I thought the squeak would go away over time, but after wearing these for over a hundred miles, it's still there. The boots are comfortable enough that I deal with… Full review

Montrail Women's Torre GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Lightweight and breathable because of the Gore-tex materials, but extremely tough. I've taken these boots through every terrain and temperature. I've climbed up to volcanic glaciers, trekked through the rainforest, hiked through the outback and survived monsoons all in pretty easy comfort. They've only just started to show wear in four years after a construction project landed them sole-deep in concrete. I'd say the Torre is a multitasked boot that can save packing space and weight. I use it as… Full review

Herman Men's Survivor

rated 5 of 5 stars Biota so comfortable I can sleep in them. This best pair of boots I've ever owned. I've owned Timberland, Wolverines, and numerous other brands of boots. I do all types of construction with these boots and hike in the woods. Found them marked down to ten bucks at Walmart. Original was 60$. I'd pay 60$ for another pair of these boots and only wear them for my after work boots. I love them. Sorry if you guys got a bad pair, but mine are the best. Full review

Esatto Men's Classic Hiker

rated 2.5 of 5 stars For $899 and an additional insole fit summed up for $1200 dollars I could have three $400 top of the line boots such as Danner or many other good boots. This boot is for people with deformed feet or if you are not unemployed and have a pocket full of money to burn and like to tell people "I own the Classic ESATTO hiker boots. What can I say? The Quality? This boot is for people who have two different size feet or have deformed feet and can't find a boot that fits them. I waited a month for the… Full review

Asolo Men's AFX 530

rated 0.5 of 5 stars I bought my boots two years before I took them out of the box and wore them for the very first time. The soles of both boots disintegrated within less than a quarter mile of walking on pavement. When I contacted Asolo their sentiment was pretty much "oh well, buy another pair." I feel better seeing the other reviews of the exact same problem (misery loves company I guess), but I'm absolutely disgusted. I heard good things about Asolo, but never again will I get suckered by them. Full review

Alico Men's Tahoe

rated 5 of 5 stars I've worn them now for well over a year, and they show virtually no signs of wear. I wear them hiking here in Colorado Rockies, foothills, urban greater Denver trails, yard work, outdoor construction — EVERYTHING. I bought these in Feb. 2013. I have literally put them through hell; hiking and climbing in Colorado Rockies, hiking urban trails in greater Denver, worn to office [look great as long as kept well lubed with Obenauf's Leather Oil — and in wet weather and hiking wet snow well daubed… Full review

Asolo Men's TPS 520 GV

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Sturdy, waterproof, and great ankle support. Highly recommend the boot when carrying a heavy load. This is my second pair of Asolos and my daughter has the same pair. Out of the box comfort. Found zero break-in time required. I typically carry a heavy pack, >40lbs, and also have weak ankles. This boot offers the sturdiness that I require and solid ankle support. I can understand that some may say that they're a bit heavy, but no issues for me. I will tell you that they totally suck on wet… Full review
