"You can learn from the teachings within this quietness. Some people teach by speeches, some by talking. But I think that it is important that you are taught by silence."

"Reminds me of that fella back home who fell off a ten-story building. As he was falling, people on each floor kept hearing him say, 'So far, so good'."

Steve McQueen...Magnificent Seven, 1960

P.S. I could have gone with one of many hiking quotes, but I use "So far so good" on a regular basis in work and on the trail...

My favorites are:

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”

John Muir

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived!"

Henry David Thoreau

“There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't sit still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest; Their's is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.”

I save quotes I like, so here is a selection.

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.
— Dalai Lama XIV

The only Zen you find at the top of the mountain is the Zen you bring with you.
—Zen proverb

There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.
— Sir Rannulph Fiennes.

Adventure is just bad planning.
— Roald Amundsen

I rejoice that there are owls.
—Henry David Thoreau

Whenever we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.
—John Muir

People are like bicycles. They can keep their balance only as long as they keep moving.
—Albert Einstein

"The only way to live is to accept each minute as an unrepeatable miracle, which is exactly what it is: a miracle and unrepeatable.
—Storm Jameson

I'll go with this one:

“You're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So... get on your way!”

OK, you guys are making me look bad for pulling a Steve McQueen quote....here's my favorite hiking one.

But if you judge safety to be the paramount consideration in life you should never, under any circumstances, go on long hikes alone. Don’t take short hikes alone, either – or, for that matter, go anywhere alone. And avoid at all costs such foolhardy activities as driving, falling in love, or inhaling air that is almost certainly riddled with deadly germs. Wear wool next to the skin. Insure every good and chattel you possess against every conceivable contingency the future might bring, even if the premiums half-cripple the present. Never cross an intersection against a red light, even when you can see all roads are clear for miles. And never, of course, explore the guts of an idea that seems as if it might threaten one of your more cherished beliefs. In your wisdom you will probably live to be a ripe old age. But you may discover, just before you die, that you have been dead for a long, long time.

Is a dream a lye if it don't come true.

Or is it something worse.

Author BS

I had a dream and everything I dreamed came true.

The dream is over now.

Now everything I do and everything I'm about to do

Will be something I never dreamed.

“I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery—air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, "This is what it is to be happy.” ~ Sylvia Plath

and of course this one that has guided my adventures for many years:

“The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait until that other is ready, and it may be a long time before they get off.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse at his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOW - What a RIDE!"

I'm enjoying all of these, partly because I love to hear inspiring quotes, but equally because I find it interesting to hear which quotes moved other people.

And Phil, there's no need to make excuses for a Steve McQueen quote!

Tongue in cheek excuse so I could enter a second time in the contest. Everlasting happiness is worth stuffing the ballot box!

Phil, to para-phrase an old Chicago saying, "Be happy earlier, Be happy often" since you're stuffing the ballot box.

I have two to share that I have always loved:

In God's wildness lies the hope of the world - the great fresh unblighted, unredeemed wilderness.

The galling harness of civilization drops off, and wounds heal ere we are aware.

-John Muir

I think over again my small adventures, my fears.

Those small ones that seemed so big for all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing.  The only thing.

To live to see the great day that dawns and the light that fills the world.

Here's another of which I was recently reminded:

Do what you can, with what you've got, where you are.

Theodore Roosevelt

And some more:

All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.
—Friedrich Nietzsche

Whenever we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.
—John Muir

There is pleasure in the pathless woods.
There is rapture in the lonely shore;
There is society where none intrudes.
By the deep sea, and music in its roar.
I love not man the less, but nature more.
—Lord Byron

No such thing as spare time. No such thing as free time. No such thing as down time. All you’ve got is LIFE time. Go.

'Follow your feet'

Me...its something I always said when trying to teach a youngster how to and how not to climb a hill and recently, on a hike in the Adirondacks, a man I mentored years ago said he used it last winter on a ski trip with others on some ascent they were having difficulty with. I had no idea he had remembered.

From the end of the earth will I call unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. ~ Psalm 61:2

This was the quote my wife and I picked for our wedding, but it comes to mind often on trail, usually followed by some giggling.
