Stoked Goods Stoke Lip & Face Balm

A really good option to avoid or deal with chapped lips and face. I like that it's a particularly fat lip balm. Bonus for putting in a paper (can be recycled) container. A bit pricy, and no sunblock. A very good lip balm (fine for face too) for cold, nasty weather that can chap and dry you out.  Five ingredients: cocoa butter, shea butter, cocoanut oil, beeswax, and vitamin E. The manufacturer says it's all organic, if you care. It has a fairly thick consistency but still smears on nicely. It smells… Full review

Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellent Treatment for Clothing, Gear, and Tents

Love, love, love this stuff! Keeps bugs and ticks away. No smell for hunting. Lasts many, many days on treated garments and gear. This is a MUST for the outdoorsman or outdoorswoman! Much better than stinky, dangerous DEET. Can also use on pets. Full review

Thermacell Backpacker Mosquito Repeller

Love this product! A real lifesaver when camping, fishing, hunting, picnicking, and fixing fence in tall weeds on our farm! Would definitely recommend this to anyone who would like to enjoy their outdoor activities without pesky bugs! Full review

Smidge Spray

Non-DEET insect repellent, good for midges, mosquitoes, and ticks. It works! Smidge was developed in Scotland for protection against Scotland's famous midges, but it also claims to offer protection against mosquitoes, horse flies, sandflies, fleas, and ticks.  According to the Smidge website, the product does not rely on DEET but on an ingredient called Picaridin or Saltidin (the latter, if I understand right, being the trade name). It is just as effective as DEET and it works by blocking the antennal… Full review

Badger Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sunscreen

I have been using Badger sunscreen this summer as an alternative to more chemically-based sun protection. It definitely does the job of keeping you from getting burned, and it doesn't have nanoparticles or potentially carcinogenic chemical agents. It also doesn't easy wash, rub, or sweat off. On the downside, it is very thick and not so easy to apply, and it can make you look like a ghost. Also, removal requires some scrubbing. My go-to sunscreen, which works extremely well, apparently isn't so… Full review

Thermacell Backpacker Mosquito Repeller

Amazing! Very impressed so far with the Backpacker Mosquito Repeller. Have previously owned the handheld version and loved it. Decided this would be great for backpacking, used the fuel I already have present for cooking. Can't speak of the science of this device other than when on, my wife and I have had no issue with mosquitos.   Comes with a handy sack to put in backpack. Screws onto fuel can easily. Once "On", simply press the ignite switch.   Even if not using for backpacking, this is a… Full review

Sea to Summit Mosquito Head Net

Large enough to fit over a hat. Small and light enough to carry anywhere. Keeps mosquitoes at bay. I have been carrying the Sea to Summit Mosquito Head Net in my backpack for years. I got it as a gift and being so small and light I just stashed it in a ditty bag along with my headlamp and a few other items which I would use occasionally on backpack trips. Up until this summer's PCT section hike from Tahoe to Yosemite I had never needed to use it even in Alaska and the Yukon. While reducing my… Full review

Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellent Treatment for Clothing, Gear, and Tents

Sawyer Permethrin insect repellent is a proactive way to take action before you get into the bugs that is effective and easy to apply. Let me first say that I received my Sawyer Permethrin as a gift for being a past Reviewer of the Month here at Trailspace. As far as bugs go, I think I am average when it comes to how attracted mosquitos are to me compared to other individuals like my wife, who tends to be a mosquito magnet. My normal approach is that when I get into an area where I am starting… Full review

Para'Kito Mosquito Repellent Band

Expensive but effective band with an eye catching color and pattern. Saved me from sheer torment. I was recommended the Parakito band while on holiday in Germany's Black Forest and having suffered 146 mosquito bites (Yes, I counted them!). I loved the range of designs choosing a vibrant one for myself but a more muted one for my partner. The instructions were clear and straightforward and the band was comfortable to wear. I wore the band 24/7 though took it off for showering despite the instructions… Full review
