Today the US National Park Service turns 98 years old!

Believe it or not, the US NPS is only 14 years older than Sean Connery, whose birthday is also today.

The NPS has been traditionally a very difficult agency. They have come a long way in the last 20 years or so. I have worked with them in the past and spent time with their biologists in places like Yellowstone. They are much more flexible now in terms of the management strategies they are willing to consider. The Great Yellowstone Fires of 1988 may have been one of the turning points.

Fire management is one of the things they have consistently bungled, including several recent fires around Yosemite. I believe that as an agency they are much better equipped moving toward the future.

The US model for National Parks has been copied world wide with great success.
