I have been using mostly external frame packs since the 1960s.  I have never liked internal frame packs, although I have tried using them.  Backpacking has not changed that much until maybe the last ten years.  It may the through hikers that deserve most of the credit for really becoming weight conscious and going ultralight.

Ageing and some busted body parts has created some impetous to save weight.  After careful deliberation, I have purchased a ULA Circuit in hopes that the weight saving plan will continue to evolve with a smaller pack.  It is liberating and exciting, but at the same time somewhat disorienting.  The spiffy belt pockets, water bottle harnesses and pockets that are reachable while wearing the pack have great appeal.  Only time will tell.
