I have seen that you can download free OpenStreetMaps for Garmin GPS devices, but can that be done for the inReach Explorer+?

Yes. The Explorer+ can download and sync maps via the Garmin site by plugging it into your computer. OSM is available right there I believe. Mine is an old SE so I've loaded OSM on the Earthmate app on my phone and Basecamp app on my PC.

If you haven't checked out the Basecamp app you may want to take a look. Very useful for mapping routes that you can sync to your device and loading maps to the device as well. I really like being able to add waypoints off the route for shelters and water sources.

Thanks, but if it's from the Garmin site, is it still free?

So far as I know. You have to have an account to access the site, but I'm not sure the subscription even needs to be active to load maps.
