Nanook was one of the films that inspired me to make documentaries. While studying Flaherty, I learned he often did things like this for comic effect. I'llnote Nanook is using a double bladed paddle in the Greenland pattern. For hunting, he would shave used a single bladed one.

I remember seeing this film for the first time in around 1970 in an anthropology class.  It made a huge impression.  I agree that this was for comic effect, but it shows how people that live in the bush figure out how to get things done.  Natives in the North always have dogs around.  In another version of this film, Nanook had a whole dog team in there with his wife and young child.
