This was in the John Muir Wilderness on a trail off a high-clearance 4x4 road near Mammoth Lakes CA.  I camped near Lake Genevieve high above Convict Lake.  There was lots of thunder and lightning all around that night, but only a little rain where I was, and some light showers the next morning.  Probably due to the difficult access, I didn't see a single person on the trail in either direction, and little sign of use in the area where I camped.  Nice :)

My first 5k race, and I be representin'!

10599191_10152312959116129_6474137130159

Finished in 33 minutes. Got beat by a 10yo boy and a mom pushing a jog stroller (as she passed me--on a hill--I said to her, "I don't really hate you, but I hate you.")

This is a hike in the mountains outside Las Vegas. It is called Trail Canyon and gives a nice rise in elevation over two miles. We were there today finishing our Peru Trek Prep.

My daughter and I did the easy class 3 scramble up Mt. Muir on the way down from Whitney. Much less crowded. She took the picture on the way down.

Remember the big G, little O, Cheerios commercials?  Well, here is my MSR model G (one of them) and a Optimus kerosene model 00 (one of them). :)  Along the PCT, north of Sierra City, CA last weekend.  The G heated the water for pasta and the 00 simmered it.  A few of my over 100 stoves now. Ouch!  Took the TS cap along, hard to do a selfie with the logo showing, my new ZPacks Solplex, second night in it.

My girlfriend and I just recently got back from our first vacation together. We spent our time in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where we hiked our first fourteener. Pikes Peak is at 14,110 feet elevation high starting at 6,00 ft elevation below, 12 miles total. We spent the night on the trail where we used gear that we saw on trailspace and enjoyed the new stickers on my Nalgene. Thanks Trailspace!!

While it's no Arches N.P., the Bell Smith Springs Natural Area has the highest natural bridge in Illinois. The underside of the arch is 30' x 125'. The trail continues on across the top of the bridge.

Donaldson Cave is a picturesque entrance that attracts many people for the photo op. But most stop there. 30' back in, a caver plunges into a 5' stream that only gets deeper as you push upstream. (Trip report coming as soon as I can put together the video!)

Early morning on the footbridge over the Androscoggin. I'm actually happier than I look in this shot but I haven't had any coffee yet.

IMG_2627a.jpg

The river is down from its crest but still running swift and high.

Gram squeamish should stop reading here...

I borrowed a couple of Mrs Stranger's kettlebells to bring this pack up to a 50lb training weight.  Last year I cycled too much and found I had lots of endurance but no pack muscles when I hit the trail.  This year I'm getting ready :)

WATER! (but not a drop to drink because we left our SteriPen at camp--not the best decision we ever made, but, hey, we lived. Our adventure was cut short, but a lesson learned the hard way always sticks better, anyway.

Only felt like a short bp trip from my yard, ended up hiking a couple hours, making it to Slate Creek CG.  Nice concrete picnic table to spread my stoves and cooking stuff out on.  Used my Enlightened Equipment 30F quilt, a little cool in it at the next mornings 26F.  I can see this is only going to be a middle of the summer quilt, no shoulder seasons as I even had on cotton blend long johns and my wool shirt with a down balaclava.  I maybe should have use the straps for the bottom.

Since I collect stoves, the two I took on this trip were a Primus 97, similar to the 96, but with a larger tank that uses kerosene.  Also had an old Optimus 8, from the 40's maybe which uses Coleman fuel/white gas.  It could be a 8F, not sure as it does have the larger diameter "pipe" from the tank to the burner.

I just got my Trailspace stickers in the mail today and immediately slapped one on my Nalgene and took a pic of it in action the first chance I got!  I couldn't get in the wilderness today, so I went with the next best thing of a backyard fire and some ENO time.

I'm at the National Challenge Course Practitioners' Symposium in Boulder, CO. Day #1 was a bit of snowshoeing/networking in the mountains. I'm standing at 9,167' elevation.  Behind me is Sawtooth Mt. and Long's Peak, the Continental Divide.

Pretty much all of South Carolina is shut down because of a huge ice/snow storm that has hit the south. I am enjoying my day off by drinking a Highland Cold Mountain out of my Trailspace pint glass on the front porch. Cheers!

Now Jay and I are about to strap on our Kathoolas and "hike" a mile to our friend's house to finish up Happy Hour (there is too much ice on the road to drive)!

So many stoves, I have to get them out.  This was only a few miles from home.  15F when I got home Sunday, 17 degrees warmer than Christmas Eve's bp trip.  Coleman 242C and 200 lanterns, Svea 105 stove.  Also, but not in report, Coleman 502 and Optimus 210.  I don't drink much beer, but I've had a hankering the last few weeks for one.  I'm a light summer drinker.

We finally have snow in the Sierra Nevadas, and today was the first time that we've had enough of it to get in some decent snowshoeing.  I figured that I'd show off my bitchin' Trailspace beanie in the bargain.  :)

Thanks to the dedicated, passionate Trailspace elves who have been kind enough to shower me with some swag!

Barb and I spent a good part of last week at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Show. The OR Shows traditionally start with an "Open Air Demo", at which many of the gear manufacturers have their new (and prototype) gear available to try out. A friend, Eric Larsen, who traversed Antarctica (plus attempted it on bicycle) and has been trying to do the North Pole (there are problems with decreasing ice coverage for the Arctic Ocean) had his 350 pound sled with all his gear on display. You could try hauling the sled using some new snowshoes that one of his sponsors had to loan out. The first photo is me trying to haul the sled. Unfortunately, I started with the sled positioned so I had to haul it over a small snowbank, plus the track was not packed down. Heaviest sled I have hauled previously was 160 pounds, with better snow conditions (less than half the weight). So the Old GreyBearded One didn't get very far - about 12 feet on the uphill section. The first photo shows me struggling to get moving. Seth was supposed to take this photo, but got occupied with something else. So Barb took it instead.
AltaORS015.jpg
That's Eric on the left behind the sled.

Eric, Barb and I posed for the photo below. And yes, Barb tried to pull the sled as well. But at exactly 5 feet tall, she was at a bit of a disadvantage.

We headed up the Rhus Ridge Trail (one of our favorite trails) to the top of Black Mountain in Rancho San Antonio and Montebello Open Space Reserves. Note the benchmark to my right.

BlackMtnNewYears1.jpg

While on the the hike, I sent messages via the Iridium satellite system to GiftOGab and Bill Heiser, and got return greetings from both. Warm day and fairly clear, given the inversion layer that has been hanging over the SFBay Area for the last month - no rain, no snow, California's driest year on record. So high fire danger. The hike is 9.7 miles round trip, and a total elevation gain of  2881 ft.

Lots of people out on the trail, celebrating the New Year, despite the tiny parking lot at the start of the trail (10 cars total). When the lot is full, some people park at Foothill College, about 2 miles from the trailhead. Most hikers were in their "Sunday Best", while we were in our usual hiking grubbies. Most people were happy and exchanging best wishes for the new year. There were, however, a few grumps - too much celebration last night?

The antenna farm behind Barb is one of 2 near the summit.

Had two days off in the middle of the week, couldn't see hanging around for two days.  Minus 2F this Christmas morning, back to moms for the work week.  This area is east of Carson Pass on 88, up the Blue Lakes road about 3 miles maybe.

I promised Alicia last December that if she sent me a TS hat I'd wear it when I facilitated groups on my high ropes course. I've kept my promise many, many times. Plus there are TS stickers stuck here and there.

One more from my time at Weldon Springs State Park.

This was taken along the banks of Salt Creek, behind the backpacking campsite I stayed at last weekend - filtered my water right from this creek!

The branches were pre-broken, so don't go thinking I went on a deforestation kick solely to find a place for a TS photo-op! :)

I went to Riverside, CA last weekend for my 55th high school reunion. While there, Barb and I hiked up Mount Rubidoux (now a city park), one of the earliest places I did serious rock climbing in the mid-1950s. First image is at the summit, next to the huge cross, where the Easter Sunrise service has been held since 1911. I'm not sure why the plaque says the cross was dedicated in 1959, since I know it was there when my family moved to Riverside in 1955.
Poly55th1.jpg

Next image is some climbers on one of the climbs just below the summit I did "back in the day". They offered me a belay, but I didn't have my harness with me, and was wearing trail runners without my rock shoes with me.

Poly55th2.jpg

Lack of rock shoes didn't completely deter me. Barb took this photo coming off a bouldering problem.

Poly55th3.jpg

Hard to believe how long it has been since I last climbed here. The rock is well-weathered granite, and somewhat crumbly. The city itself has changed greatly since high school days - much larger than it was "back in the day". Probably the first time a Trailspace hat has been on the mountain, though.

Just finished a weekend backpacking trip at Weldon Springs State Park in Clinton, IL.

photo-1.jpg

Was more than certain to represent Trailspace: here's the trusty 'ol Nalgene sitting on the fencepost of one of their backpacking sites, along the Salt Creek Backpack Trail.

photo-2.jpg

Camped at another site right off the creek's banks, filtering my water straight from 'em.

Yesterday was a beautiful fall day for the Sugarloaf Mountain Uphill Climb in Maine. The race ended above the clouds at the summit (second highest in Maine).

Yes, that is a cast on my left hand, which I broke running a week before. It will be OK.

The cave at Indian Kitchen is a tight 50' crawlway at the back of an overhang. HornRimmedHiker snapped a shot of me squeezing out of the hole. Note the smart-looking cap taking the place of a traditional caving helmet.

This hike was phenomenal and concluded my weeklong adventure in the North Cascades!  Fellow local hikers commented that this is the best hike in Washington and its hard to argue!  The background peak is Mount Shuksan.

I just got back from a trip visiting the National Parks in the Sierra Nevada; Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia!  I brought along my trusty 15 year old sticker covered Nalgene once again for a few Travelocity-esque travel pics featuring Trailspace at Sequoia NP.  The Rim Fire smoke stayed at bay long enough to get a clear hike in to Nevada Falls in Yosemite but unfortunately my bottle was MIA.  It reappeared in the car after Kings Canyon so it came along on the hike through the Giant Forest to Moro Rock.  Yet another place Id like to spend more time at!

I did a couple wonderful hikes with my 10 year old son in Glacier National Park Montana a couple weeks ago.  It was our first time doing any serious type of hiking together in GNP.  We had a wonderful time and both of us took lots of amazing pictures.  It was a great couple days of hiking with my favorite hiking partner.

What a great way to spend a weekend!

We caught 19 Brookies in one day, this was the biggest. Of course my son won the "biggest fish" contest!

It's always nice to be in the mountains when it's hot in the Denver area.

This is a restored covered bridge on Sugar River State Trail just outside of Brodhead, WI. It's a rails-to-trails path. Minimal incline makes it a great day ride for even beginning bikers. The picturesque rivers, wildlife, and expansive farms keep it interesting for more experienced bikers.

My wife and I just completed a 4,000-mile motorcycle trip that included Glacier, Yellowstone, and Rocky Mountain NP's.  I'll post up a couple of reviews of new gear that we used later.

This pic was taken at White Sand campground,  Clearwater National Forest, Idaho, about 15 miles SW of Lolo Pass.  We'd ridden from Boise in 100+ degree temps, and the tiny White Sand CG was just the tonic to sooth our sore bodies.  The Starbuck's Via in the mug didn't hurt much, either.:)

Alright, ladies and gents of the TS community:

Made the leap, and completed my first solo backpacking trip (and first backpacking trip, period) this weekend.

These were taken on the trails and lookouts of Mississippi Palisades State Park in Savanna, IL.

Finally did the math and hiked about 12 miles between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning! More than I've hiked in my life, but definitely built some muscle and learned some things along the way.

A.) I'm alive/I made it!

B.) Enjoyed the heck out of it, and already wondering where I should take my next trip.

C.) Already posted three new reviews - the first of many from this trip. More importantly, expect a trip report soon. This was a great experience by itself, and I was very fortunate to have it be my first experience.

This was on a 4-day/3-night trip in Kings Canyon National Park this weekend.  I didn't set any land speed records as I did only just under 40 miles, but it was a great trip ... except for the 5,000' climb out of Roads End in ~90 deg weather with the afternoon sun :-o.

Here is my Trailspace pint glass filled with Mammoth Brewing CO Golden Trout Pilsner in Mammoth Lakes, CA, at the Hilltop Hot Tub. Nice little Monday :) Sadly though, the wind was blowing and  dumped the entire glass into the hot tub immediately after this shot. FAIL.

In between our big hikes to the summits of El Capitan and Half Dome, we ventured over to Mammoth Lakes and hit up the hot tubs!

Trailspace caps aren't just for the trail, lol :).  This was with some racing friends at an autocross event here in the Bay Area today.  I even got to ride along for a good adrenaline rush (though the TS cap was replaced by a helmet for that part.) :)

Today I went for an 11 km (distance) 750m (elevation gain) road run up into Vengedalen, followed by a little hike up the valley wall to a viewpoint on the ridge below Romsdalshorn -- straight across Romsdalen to the legendary Troll Wall. Here's a selfie of me and the wall at the day's high point. Trailspace strikes again!

It's past time for me to share some Trailspace sticker and hat pics of my own.

So here are two from the end of April, skinning up Saddleback Mountain here in Maine with our family, including the 4- and 8-year-old (not pictured, though they do have Trailspace stickers on their helmets).

Oh, and those are my new, very plain, black Dirty Girl gaiters :).

The River-to-River Trail starts at the Ohio River in Elizabethtown, IL. It ends 160-miles later at the Mississippi River in Grand Tower, IL.

After following the road north out of E'town for about .5 miles, you come to the first R2R blaze. The blaze directs you off the main road onto a dirt farm-lane. One mile later, you enter the Shawnee National Forest.

March 2013, MuhKeeTa & I did half the trail, from E'town to Goddard Crossing. We hope to do the second half next year.

They're a bit hard to see clearly in this (no tripod, "sit the camera on a rock") shot, but there's a Trailspace Cap and a Trailspace Sticker (on the water bottle) :).

This is from dinnertime on a weekend backpacking trip this weekend to Smith Peak in Yosemite.    I had a great site right on top with magnificent vistas all around!  It was a great trip, notwithstanding the large rodent which kept waking me up all night trying to steal my stuff.

Usually I hang everything "stealable" from a tree (or bring it into my tent) to prevent such thievery, but didn't this time for several items I suspected to be laced with poison oak, as I didn't want to handle them, and certainly didn't want them in the tent.  In the end, the rodent got a prize of one gaiter (I looked and looked but never found it).  But I rescued my shoes & trekking poles before they disappeared too...

And I even got to try out the micro spikes I bought this winter, but hadn't had a chance to try yet, climbing up the snow slope on the summit cone.

I doubt it is still there.

This was on the trail toward Alta Peak in Sequoia National Park, a couple miles from the peak.  I turned around because I ran out of time (and because the trail crossed a steep slope, and I saw a couple mini avalance snowballs, or at least that's what I imagined they were).  I'm lacking in experience in winter conditions to make me comfortable crossing such a spot, especially when solo, and especially on a trail with no fresh tracks (so I am confident there wasn't anyone for at least a couple miles in any direction).

Anyway it was a most excellent hike.  I was in the fog and clouds hiking up to the ridge at Panther Gap.  A while later, along the ridge, the clouds began to clear and I was treated to an amazing view with an undercast.

I camped in the new winter camping area at Wolverton "snow play area" in the park.  Unfortunately the winter camping at Lodgepole campground is no more.  Due to budget constraints they closed Lodgepole for the winter.  Apparently this was due to maintenance costs (and running the heat to maintain the rest room).  The new camping area isn't as nice (it's basically a parking lot) but it's better than the place being shut down completely.
