Last minute plans came together and Patman and I managed to hang out in the snow in Virginia.

Pretty days, but long nights this time of year. Were you close enough to have a conversation from tent to tent? My only company on snow trips tends to be a book. Would be nice to have someone other than the sled to talk to :)

A bit better view...

We chatted a bit outside the tent...and enjoyed a nice IPA Patrick hauled up the hill.

But then headed for the tents and bundled up like usual.

Next night we were closer but winds well over 30 mph with snow so we couldn't hear well.

Thanks for the excellent company as always Phil, I especially enjoyed the stories so obviously woven into the terrain for you.

Well, let's make it official with a hat pic:

You too Patrick. Always fun and thanks for the beer!

That was a cool sunset under the clouds. The hat was under your hood in the first pic so I think you get credit either way.

And I'm glad neither of us took photos of the evidence of the "meeting" between the coyote and the rabbit...snow makes it look so much worse.

A great trip...my toes are warm again!

Nice bobcat track!

I would have checked out that coyote-rabbit meeting picture though.

Great stuff, Patman!!!  This pic really reminds me of the AT coming out past the Pine Mt trail jct above Scales in Mt Rogers.  It has a wooden fence stile you have to go thru.  Or heck it could be anywhere.

I just got back today from a long trip and had to spend 71 hours on top of Flats Mt in a terrible rainstorm/windstorm and finally caught my ride out today at Noon.

My coldest day was on January 20 on Hangover Mt at about 5F.  Mt Rogers is also very cold.

You nailed it Tipi...we skipped the Bear tooth Rock campsite as you call it and opted for a spot in the shelter of trees between the AT and Crest trail...good thing with the winds that night.

71 hours on flats??  That surely is a record , look forward to report! Your name came up on this trip Walter,  I often remember seeing that  tunnel tent on Wilburn ridge as I crested the knob just up from Rhodo gap on one of my first visits to the Virginia Highlands

I, too, was at the Highlands last weekend. It would have been nice to meet you there. The snow cover was nice even if the temps were a bit cold and the wind blustery, as Pooh Bear would say.

It was definitely blustery. Were you around the Mt Roger's area? We didn't see too many people out that weekend.
