Mitchell Peak day hike

I figured that since it is only three weeks from my long backpacking trip this summer, I'd better get some time it at elevation to get ready.  Friday I went with some friends to hike up Mitchell Peak in Jennie Lakes Wilderness, just outside Kings Canyon NP.  It was originally just me and a hiking friend with his family (wife and three kids), but ballooned into a bigger expedition.  Here is the crew at the trailhead

The summit is only 10,365', which is technically not above treeline (but the rocks on top preclude any trees).  Most of the route is in typical Red Fir forest:

I really like Mitchell Peak because it is set out away from the main ranges and has outstanding views in all directions.   As I look at all of the higher country on three sides, I can trace canyons, passes, and ridges that I have been on over the years.  Here is a sampling of the views, starting with a shot looking down to the hazy valley where I live, 10,000' lower than the summit:

More views from the summit

And the last shot, looking back up as others in the group were still descending from the top

It was a great day to be out, and another bonus was how pleasant it was.  At home in the valley it was around 104, but on top it was so nice and cool with a fresh breeze.  Everyone did well and had a great time.
