Columbus Weekend is the last weekend Baxter stays open before closing the gates for park rejuvenation. This all happens to typically fall on the peak for fall foliage, a sure beautiful place to visit.

BSP is just WNW of Millinocket

A friend has visited this park every Columbus weekend for the last 15 years, and I was fortunate enough to come along! We stayed away from Mt. Katahdin, and opted to visit the most remote area of the park, which was incredible! This is one of the most tranquil and relaxing backpacking trips I have been on in a very long time.

A librarian, a bartender, and a surgeon go off into the woods...

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. We took a trip up there at peak foliage last year and so I have some sense of how beautiful it is. Looks like a great hike -- might have to try it. Were you able to camp on the island? -- Robyn

Looks like the leaves held on just long enough for you. I was sort of expecting they'd dropped already based on what I've been seeing in the Whites.

For all the trips I've made to Baxter that dang island is still on my to do list. I've come down via Pogey Notch one time and done the turn from Davis to Russell to Wass Stream LTs several times but have yet to get out to that lake. Maybe next year :)

Thanks for sharing the pics. You can never go wrong with a a shot of Katahdin and Hamlin from across Whidden Pond, even with the clouds up top, but lots of other nice ones too!

Robyn- Yes, we reserved the lean-to on Wassataquoik Island... It doesn't get more quiet than that, except for chasing Norm the chipmunk. People in the past have definitely fed the critters because of their 'cuteness'. Vermin.

LoneStranger- You will not be disappointed paying a visit to the island! After hiking back out to the trailhead, it was very strange & crowded. People hanging out everywhere like the lot at a Dead show. Fancy jackets instead of batik tye-dye!

Joseph- We hiked all of the way to Wassataquoik Island, where two canoes are available. One is reserved for people using the lean-to on the island. The last picture is from Russell Pond, where canoes are also available... A bargain at $1.00/hour!!!

Sounds perfect. We were able to get a lean-to at Isle au Haut (only 5 sites). It was amazingly beautiful and quiet. I didn't want to come home. You might check it out. You can request reservations starting in April. Maybe I should do a review ;)

Thanks for sharing your experience.  -- Robyn

Wow looks great!  Looks very "wilderness-ee".  How's the fishin' in that lake?

Lots of fish in this lake! Fishing will get you a big, fat fine after Sep 30, rob5073... There are two kinds of fish in Wassataquoik Lake: the typical Brookie, and then the infamous Blueback Trout, also known as Arctic Char. They're pretty rare in the lower 48 from what I'm told... and delicious.

Beautiful area!  I'd love to be there in the fall, it reminds me of my fall backpacking trips in the Adirondacks in the '70s.
