Six years and thirty pounds ago, on Father’s Day, my oldest son and I hiked to Camp Muir on Mt Rainier for our first trip up the mountain ever. This year, five summits later (for me), we repeated the feat with his youngest sister and brother along as well. It took two pounds of gummi bears and two breaks but four hours of walking yielded the high camp.
Only parents will understand how proud I was to have my eleven and thirteen year old with their now eighteen year old brother at camp.
I’ve included a few then-vs.-now pics from six years ago. Note, I’ve slimmed down and my son has grown up considerably.
That burly, 6' 01" future soldier in front was just a skinny twelve year old last time he was here, kinda like his eleven year old brother behind him.
A tough mountaineer with Mt Adams under her belt already
The critters wanted gummi bears but we gently said, "no!"

Smiles that can't be bought
When the kids get the camera
Some things never change, asleep in 30 min just like 6 years ago
Its still really pretty
Looking up the route
NOW, LET'S LOOK BACK SIX YEARS AGO....
I was thirty-odd pounds heaver in 2012 :(
My eighteen year old back in 2012
Oldest son, about to fall asleep, but happy in 2012
We were so different then!

Then again some things, like a Father's Day outing with one's children, have an immortal quality to them.
