The AeroPress GO

I bought this to bring with me on my last backpacking trip. I tested it quite a few times at home and was very impressed with the high quality coffee from such a cheap device compared to other coffee/espresso machines.
I used my favorite beans, watched a few Youtube videos and I was well on my way to making a very good cup of coffee with this device.
I bought a mini conical burr grinder to use with it and a 10 oz bag of my favorite coffee beans, I put all of these in a stuff sack and added it to my backpack. I was so excited that I was actually going to have fresh brewed coffee in the back country, using fresh beans as well. Was this too good to be true?

On this particular trip...yes it was too good to be true. The stuff sack with the grinder, AeroPress GO, and the beans was weighing in at 2.0 pounds.
When we arrived in Yosemite Valley, my husband and I decided last minute (15 minutes before hopping on the hiker bus to Tuolumne Meadows) to unload some heavier items and send them home. Extra clothes, some other small items, and the AeroPress GO. We ended up sending home a total of 15 pounds of gear between the two of us.
My dreams of fresh ground beans and fresh brewed coffee were now gone.
Thankfully I did pack enough instant coffee packets in the bear vaults. Multiple varieties that I will review later in another post.
Did I enjoy the instant coffee options that I brought? Not entirely.
Was I happy to have coffee at all in the morning? YES, of course.
Was it the perfect cup? A HUGE NO!
Did I wish at the time that I did not send home the coffee system? YES
I talked about it every morning and thought about it every day. I am a coffee connoisseur. I should have kept the whole kit, the beans, the grinder, the Aero-Press. Hindsight, I wish I didn't send it home. I will be bringing it on the next trip. When coffee means that much to someone, the 2 pounds would have been well worth it.
Just think about it...Fresh brewed coffee in camp every morning...ahhhhh

Sounds amazing right?
For the past 10 years I have brought instant coffee on the trail, super lightweight, no mess, barely any amount of garbage to pack out, and a guaranteed cup of coffee every morning. So when we were lightening our load, I figured I would be satisfied with the instant choices I had already buried in my bear vault before even buying the AeroPress.
If you are a coffee lover like me and can truly appreciate the very best brewed cup of coffee from the very best beans out there, I am sure you can appreciate what I am talking about here. For all you other people, I'm sure you are thinking, WOW, she is a little crazy about coffee.
Let's get back to the review here on the subject at hand. The AeroPress makes the best cup of coffee for the price of the gadget. I use it at work, I use it at home when I just want a quick cup of coffee in the morning and forgot to turn on the Rocket Espresso Mazzafiato, and don't have time to wait for boiler to heat up.
I swear to you, the AeroPress does not make a bitter cup, nor does it make a too acidic cup of coffee. In my mind you will NOT get a bad cup of coffee using the Aero-Press.
It is definitely worth the small investment if you are a coffee lover.

The AeroPress is a compact, lightweight, and highly versatile coffee maker that’s perfect for both home use and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re backpacking, camping, or just need a quick cup at work, it delivers smooth, rich coffee with minimal effort and cleanup.
Pros
- Brews coffee in under 2 minutes.
- Affordable compared to other coffee makers.
Cons
- Not ideal for large groups unless you brew multiple times.
I’ve been using the AeroPress for several months on both camping trips and at home. On the trail, it’s been a game changer—lightweight enough to carry in my pack, and it gives me a strong, smooth cup of coffee in the morning without fuss. Cleanup is especially easy when water is scarce; just press out the puck and rinse quickly.
At home, I still reach for it over my drip machine when I want a clean cup fast. The taste is rich, less bitter than a French press, and you can adjust brewing styles by playing with grind size and brew time. The only downside is that if I’m with a group, I end up making several rounds since it only brews one or two cups at once.
I first came across the AeroPress while reading an article about the best portable coffee makers on a gear review website, and after trying it myself, I can confirm it lives up to the hype.
Background
Highly recommended for solo adventurers and coffee lovers who value convenience and quality.
