Arc'teryx Gamma Hoody

rated 4 of 5 stars
photo: Arc'teryx Gamma Hoody soft shell jacket

A near perfect softshell that does everything, but doesn't do anything particularly well.

  • 1. Great build quality
  • 2. Very breathable
  • 3. Very versatile
  • 4. Great fit and aesthetics

  • 1. A bit expensive for a softshell
  • 2. Does not do anything particularly well
  • 3. A little bit heavy

The Gamma LT hoody was on my list for about half year before I finally made the decision. For softshells I already had the Marmot ROM2.0 and the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoody so this was not necessarily the jacket I "need" but the jacket that I really "want". I'll be comparing this jacket to both the ROM2 and the Ferrosi which I have used both casually and in outdoor.

Personally I feel that the ROM2 is the best softshell out of these three because of its hybrid construction which makes it both breathable, comfortable and weather resistance. It's also cheaper than the Gamma LT. The Ferrosi hoody is not as versatile, but it's super lightweight and breathable which makes it perfect for summer activities. The Gamma LT, on the other hand, does everything above well, but does not excel in any way. It's more breathable than the ROM2 but not as weather resistant. It's more weather resistant than the Ferrosi but is also a bit heavier. And it's also the most expensive one.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a great softshell. If you are not outdoor clothes collectors like I am (I do realize that I buy too many technical clothes...), I think it's a great choice for someone who only want one softshell for mild outdoor activities.

Just for reference, I'm 6 feet and 175 lbs (183cm and 78kg). A large fits me well with room for layers. A medium also fits but there will not be any room for layers.

I've owned mine for two months. I've worn it both casually around town and hiking in the rain.
