Asics Gel-Kayano 30
Maximum cushioned modern stability road shoe that comes in three widths. Put 400 miles on them, still look good, a little wear outside rear heels, have lost a little bit of cushioning, will replace. I did replace the laces with shock cord for convenience.
Pros
- Cushion feels nice after a few miles
- Three widths
- Faster than it seems
Cons
- 10.7 oz
- So much cushion it seems to lack rebound, giving it a clunky feeling

I usually run about 5 miles three times a week on mostly concrete. Usually use a shoe with some stability because of tendon issues (PTT). Formerly used Hokas with some success but had problems with small toe boxes as I do best with an EE forefoot and a C heel.
The ASICS line sometimes comes in three widths—normal, wide, and double wide. The wide has the same heel as the normal width but a wider forefoot which works out well for me. I have ASICS 4000 and 2000 GT and some old Kayanos and a few others.
Best way I can describe the Gel-Kayano 30 is it has as much cushion as any maximum cushion Hoka (a lot), but the 30 also has some unobtrusive stability and a wide toe box in a single wide version along with a narrow heel (which I am unable to find in a Hoka). I figured with all the cushion my 5-mile time would be slower in the 30 than with the ASICS 4000, but I was faster.
To sum up, I like the shoe, despite its lack of rebound, and for some reason I cannot explain I am faster in it. Maybe less pain?
Background
Been running for 52 years despite broken ankle, posterior tibial tendonitis, shin splints and ilio-psoas tendonitis in the past. Favorite make of shoe is ASICS and Oboz (in a 12 wide for both).
