After boots, socks are probably the most crucial decision any walker, hiker, or trekker will make yet they are seriously underrated. The humble sock is a vital piece of kit and deserves a great deal of consideration to find the right pair. I learned the hard way…

I ended up abandoning a long distance trail after two days because I thought I could get away with a budget pair of socks. It was summer, conditions were warm, and I wore them with a liner. Me feet sweltered and my soles became a mass of blisters. I returned home defeated by the humble sock.

Enter the Bridgeale Hike Lightweight. Bridgedale say the Hike Lightweight Coolmax Comfort maximises the natural benefits of cotton with a comfortable unrestrictive knit. Featuring Fusion Tech Coolmax Comfort Technology for softness and superb wicking performance to keep feet dry and comfortable whilst walking and trekking in warmer climates.

You really do get what you pay for. Once my feet had recovered, I headed back to the trail and continued my journey. The rest of my trip was blister-free, much to my relief. I also elected not to wear sock liners and I did not notice any difference in comfort, in fact it aided keeping my feet cooler. They are suited to warmer climates and are superb at wicking sweat, but I wear these socks all year round as my feet run so hot.

The drawback with a sock of this weight is that they will not last as long. I took the liberty of buying three packs to keep me going as I like them so much. My original pair have begun to wear on the ball of my foot and at the heel so they have been relegated to Sunday walks on the Downs.

These socks, humble as they may be, are one of the best purchases I have ever made. The difference between failure and success is a fine one so don’t leave it to chance. Do your feet a favour and buy the right socks. If you are looking for socks for warm weather activities look no further than these. They are much cheaper than merino socks too.
