A disappointing product from Gerber who is normally renowned for quality and innovative equipment. This appears to be a gimmick aimed at the gift market.

  • Axe chops and knife cuts well enough.
  • Compact
  • Well weighted
  • Comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

  • The knife does not stay in place and could become lost.
  • Knife blade is very small.

Forged steel head with overmolded handle. I bought this for use on the odd night or two camping in the woods when a fire would be needed. Whilst it is a good idea in principle, it fails in practice.

The axe is well weighted and cuts small wood well enough. The knife is quite small and I would have preferred something at least an inch longer. The knife is stowed in the handle and held in place via a magnet. This is where in my opinion the product fails.

The trouble is I do not trust the magnet  to hold the knife in place when the axe is knocked about a bit. It would be all too easy for the knife to fall out and since it is stowed in the handle it will disappear without being noticed. A lanyard could be attached but this would be extra hassle. The axe could be stowed in a backpack but this would defeat the object. I like to have mine handy by attaching it to my belt.

I guess it is OK as a novelty gift ( I am sure that is what it is aimed at), but beyond that there are better products available. It is probably best to buy these items separately so then that's birthday and Christmas sorted!

Gerber has been putting out some duds lately, especially all the Bear Grylls stuff. Thanks for the honest review.
