Greenbelly Meal2Go bars are excellent, balanced, calorie-dense meal bars that are perfect for backpacking and hiking. They taste good, are satisfying, and are easy to pack.

Pros

  • Taste is good
  • Good nutrition benefits
  • Easy to pack
  • Plenty of calories

Cons

  • Limited shelf life

I always look for the best, lightest, and smallest meal options for multi-day backpacking trips. The common dehydrated meals are fine, but not always my favorite. For the last few years i've been enjoying Greenbelly Meal2Go bars because they are relatively healthy, taste good, not too heavy, and don't take up much room in my food bag.

Lunch somewhere on the Ice Age Trail

You can find all the nutrition info on Greenbelly's website. But basically, each packet contains two meal bars that are stuck together. Both bars are around 700 calories total and have a decent balance of carbs, protein, and fat. The ingredients—thankfully!—do not include a bunch of processed foods or preservatives. That means they do have a shelf life of around one year, but I'm totally fine with that.

I like the chocolate banana flavor.
There are a different flavors of the Meal2Go bars, including peanut apricot, spiced caramel apple, and mango cashew coconut. My teenage sons even eat these bars happily when we go to the Boundary Waters. Most of us like the banana chocolate flavor and the spiced caramel apple flavor.

Lunch for three days on the trail.
Each package has a ziplock feature so you can save part of the bars for later.  Because of the ziplock feature, I use the empty packages to store my trash in until I find a garbage can. I've also found that these Greenbelly bars  don't really melt in heat, although I've not taken them to places that have been over 80 degrees (F). These really go well with a bottle of electrolytes or coffee at lunch on trail. They sit well with me and don't cause any stomach issues. I really look forward to eating these when I'm backpacking.

Each meal pack is around $8.00, though you can get them a bit cheaper if you buy in bulk. I don't hesitate to spend that much on these because I really do like them, they hit the spot on trail, and they are relatively healthy. My wife and I have eaten and enjoyed these on the High Sierra Trail, the Maroon Bells (alternate) loop, the Ice Age Trail, the Superior Hiking trail, and more. I'm not even close to sick of them.

Highly recommended!
