Summary

An excellent skirt/kilt for MEN and women hikers and backpackers. Nice length. Like the blue/green plaid colors.

Pros

  • Free movement
  • 3 secure pockets
  • Nice length
  • Solid construction
  • Recycled synthetic fabric

Cons

  • Heavier fabric 186 g — not real quick drying
  • No drawstring
  • Waistband may roll
  • Built-in short

This is a really comfortable, well-built walking, hiking, and backpacking skirt/kilt for MEN and women. As I wear this more around home, in my home-office, and while working outside on the ranch, I am appreciating this skirt more and more.

Purchased the "Mad-About-Plaid Blue/Green" women’s. Alison proportioned the material nicely top to bottom, providing a real range of motion not found in more straight hiking skirts.

Looked at the men's Running Kilt version, but the length is listed as 59 cm (23 in), which would make it hit uncomfortably right on my knees. So, purchased the women's version and removed the built-in short to offer more wear versatility, with underwear or not.

Weight is 186 g (6.5 oz) with inner shorts removed, and side seam is 47 cm (18 in) for women's XXL. Has a 5 cm (2 in) elastic waistband. Fabric is a slick, moderately breathable, comfortable recycled synthetic. Design has no pleats, slits, or drawcords.

Includes three secure pockets — A BIG PLUS — all just below the waistband: one 12 cm (4.5 in) deep zippered in the center back, one 19 cm (7.5 in) deep zippered on the left seam, and a 12 cm (4.5 in) deep Velcro-secured right side cargo-style pocket centered over the right seam, where Velcro takes up top 1.3 cm (0.5 in) of pocket depth.

Elastic waistband will sometimes roll over when sitting down, likely as a result of removing inner short. Fabric may snag if skidding bum down a rock. Construction is excellent with serger-finished bottom hem. Wish there was more adjustment in waistband via a drawstring and a lighter quick drying fabric, making this a 5-star skirt.
