The Men's Southern Traverse has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best trail running shoes for 2024.

Good: Breezy mesh uppers. Traditional Keen wide toe, but not as wide as some other Keen models.

Bad: The footbed isn't level. It curves upward at the last two or three inches, raising your heel and leaving a space under your arch. Even with aftermarket heat-moldable insoles, I cannot get enough arch support. As a result the shoes are don't provide any real motion control at the rear of the foot (not really an issue for me), are fatiguing to wear, and possibly increase the risk of injury.

Also, the cushioning under the heel is very firm, creating a hard heelstrike. That might be okay for soft, light runners, but not for me.

The shoes are also relatively heavy.

All three negative attributes are possibly the result of a single "feature", the "S3 Heel Support Structure." So I am going to avoid any Keens with that feature from now on.
