Keen Men's Targhee IV Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot
Comfortable, waterproof hiking boots with a wide toe box that worked well for backpacking and day hiking in wet and muddy conditions. They required almost no break in and have held up well after about 100 miles. Traction was slightly slick when new but improved after some use.
Pros
- Comfortable right out of the box with almost no break-in period
- Wide toe box and good overall fit
- Waterproofing has held up well through mud, puddles, and shallow creek crossings
- Solid ankle support for backpacking and they have been holding up well after about 100 miles of hiking.
Cons
- Traction was a little slick at first and took some time and miles to break in.
- The footbed also feels fairly flat compared to some other hiking boots.
I’ve been using these boots for both backpacking and day hiking. Most of my hiking is in the mountains of Western Washington, but I also wore them on the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon.
One thing I appreciated right away was that there was basically no break-in period. They felt comfortable right out of the box and I didn’t experience any hot spots on longer hikes. The fit works well for me. The toe box is nice and wide and the overall width feels good, which is something I look for in hiking boots. The footbed does feel fairly flat, but it hasn’t caused any issues.
The waterproofing has performed well so far. I’ve taken them through plenty of mud and wet trails as well as shallow creek crossings and puddles and my feet stayed dry. Ankle support has also been solid while carrying a pack.
The only thing I noticed early on was that the traction needed a little time to come in. The soles were a bit slick when brand new and needed some miles and scuffing before they really started gripping well.
After a few months and roughly 100 miles of hiking they are holding up well and have been a comfortable, reliable boot for both day hikes and backpacking.
Background
I regularly hike and backpack and have used several hiking boots over the years. I’ve been using these KEEN Targhee IV boots for a few months and have put roughly 100 miles on them across day hikes and backpacking trips in Western Washington, as well as a hike on the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon.
