Still have the Kelty, and use it occasionally.

Bought the Kelty Mountaineer back in 1960.  Back then you bought directly from Kelty by mail order. I do not believe they were sold through any stores back then.

There were only two models, and the cost as I recall was $36. It was the unquestionably best pack at the time, and everyone who was a serious backpacker had one. I still have it, and occasionally for short trips, it comes out. I suspect it has over 1,000 miles on it now.

I have only seen one other in the past couple years, a visitor at the Boy Scout camp that I was director of about 15 years ago who showed up with one exactly like mine...  Antique?

Thanks for sharing reviews of your long-lasting gear, David. Sounds like they've had a lot of adventures with you. If you have some pictures to show them off, I'm sure others would love to see them in your review too.

To add photos to your review:

1. Click the yellow “Edit this review" button at the top or bottom of your review. (You can do this to update your review, add new info, pics, etc.)

2. Click in the Detailed Review section where you’d like to place an image.

3. Click the Insert/Edit Image icon (third from the right, looks like a tree) at the top of the Detailed Review section.

4. Select a photo you’ve a) already uploaded to Trailspace or b) a new photo to upload; then click Insert. (You can select more than one image at a time.)

5. The image will be inserted in your review with a space for a Caption. You can edit the “Caption” text, or delete it if you don’t want a caption. You also can cut and paste the image in a new spot of the review, if you want.

6. Once done with your review edits, click the “Save Your Changes” button at the bottom of your review.

I hope that helps.
